Need info. on North Myrtle Beach
Hi all,
My family is planning an August reunion in North Myrtle Beach. I haven't been to the area since I was a child. We vacationed there during the summers of 1984 through 1989. From what I remember, the beach was lovely, as were the accommodations (we stayed in the same oceanfront condo every year but I can't remember the name of it right now). Anyway, I am wondering what NMB is like now. My brothers, sister and I all have very young children, so we want a place that is safe, both the beach and surrounding areas, with activities for the children, as well as good restaurants and shopping. We're not much into nightlife, so bars/nightclubs are not important to us. Could anyone give me some recommendations as to the best beach area for us (as well as areas to avoid, if any). Also if you have any recommendations on accommodations (we are seeking an oceanfront condo) and restaurants, I would most appreciate it. Thank you for your help. EmmyG

The Beach Cove in Windy Hill is nice and one of the prettiest, widest, white sand beaches on the Strand.
You're near Barefoot Landing, a great place to shop, eat, visit Alabama Theater, House of Blues, Alligator Adventure too.
There's only one place to avoid and it's small: Atlantic Beach.

Thank you, David. Can you tell me where Atlantic Beach is? I've never heard of this. Is it within North Myrtle Beach?
Also, do you know anything about Crescent Beach? One of my brothers found a couple places there, but we don't know anything about it. We'll also look into Windy Hill. Thanks again. EmmyG

Hi EmmyGrace,
Coming into NMB you first have Windy Hill, then Cresent Beach, then Atlantic Beach, then Ocean Drive, then Cherry Grove.
Here is a map:

Where it says Ingram Beach, should be Ocean Drive Beach.

Couple of nice places in North Myrtle Beach are Cresent Shores (larger condo than most; nice area); North Beach Plantation (will be opening in March/April; by far the best new oceanfront condo in the area; directly across from Barefoot Landing).

Atlantic Beach is at the south end of N. Myrtle---it's the first primarily black-owned beach there. The entire N. Myrtle area, including Cherry Grove is nice---the beaches are great, and accomodations are what you'd expect in a beach resort area. We've never felt "unsafe" anywhere....I'm sure, just like anywhere, stupidity and carelessness play a big part in crime!

I have a soft spot in my heart for Ocean Creek, right across from Barefoot Landing. My family owned a condo there for 20 years and I practically grew up there. I had so much fun as a kid.

Hello EmmyGrace,
We are a family of 6 (with my parents - age 66, 72) and my kids is ages 6 & 8.
We have been to NMB last August for a week. We stayed in Avista Resort, oceanfront 2 bedroom condo. It was quite nice. And their price is pretty reasonable. We are going again this August 15 - 21, 2009. We will be staying in the same resort, but this time we are taking 3 bedroom oceanfront corner unit. If you book now, they have this manager special. For the time we will be there, including everything...it is around $1572.
We also booked the Le Grand Cirque, going to the matinee will save some money. Last year, we went to the Dixie Stampede, it was ok.
By the way, the Avista resort also has another sister resort called Seaside resort. Hope this helps!
