This may be a strange question but how is the produce?
I currently live in Maryland and I have been enjoying great local produce in the summer. I will be moving to Myrtle Beach in less then a month and I could not help but wonder how the produce is. Obviously I am not going to spot a farm driving down 17, but are there farms in surrounding areas? If so, what kind of fresh local produce can I look forward to? Maryland has wonderful local corn and tomatoes. Any chance I will be able to find that in Myrtle Beach?

It's funny you asked that because we were just talking about it the other day. We moved from NJ and the stores I use to shop in the produce was great. The closest store (and least expensive) is Walmart for food here and I buy produce there but it always seems damaged. I worked in a supermarket years ago and we would throw out produce that looks better than what they have in Walmart. I also shop in Food Lion sometimes and it's very nice produce but a lot more expensive. I guess it's a case of you get what you pay for. Costco produce is good also. NJ is known for it's tomatoes, blueberries and corn...I have found the tomatoes and the corn here to be very good. The blueberries always say "from NJ" so they are good as well.
There are local produce stands near me in Conway and going further west but I haven't seen any in Myrtle Beach. Someone that lives closer to the beach will have to answer that.

Years ago when I had a condo in Surfside there used to be a flea market there in Surfside on the weekends. There was a produce market there and it was very good. Since it's been a few years since I have visited I don't know if its still there. Maybe someone can comment and let us know. Good question I love fresh produce.

I used to have an apartment on 17th in Surfside. There was a farm stand across the street where I used to always buy my produce...until I saw the stand owner buying a cart full of fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. My advice: just grow your own in half-barrels.

This years' peach crop, and corn, and squash, but especially the peaches, is the sweetest, most tender in memory, and I've been here all my life (50+). I'm talking about local curb market produce. The constant heat and no rain has taken its toll on most by now.

There used to be a great little market called Indigo Farm off of Rt. 9 down a windy road next to the Bell & Bell dealership...may still be there. It's an actual farm with a market right there. Ditto on the roadside markets, they have generally been good, IMO.

Mayhurst.. Indigo is still there. Farm fresh always..
Also, many local farmers come to Myrtle's Market which is located close to the police Dept off of 10th ave (Mr. Joe White Ave) at the intersection of Oak Street.

Lots of roadside stands
I just moved here from NJ not long ago and had the same question. As I drive along Rt. 17, I see lots of roadside stands, but I haven't been to any of them yet. I have been to a place in Murrells Inlet called Lee's Market. I've been back several times because they have wonderful produce. Local and Jersey tomatoes, fresh corn, fresh fruit, etc. As a previous poster mentioned, the peaches this year have been perfect! Everything I have gotten from them has been wonderful and I am very picky about produce ~ won't buy it in a grocery store unless there's no alternative. They also have a very good selection of cheeses and they sell "prime" cuts of meat. They are also very friendly and are good salespeople! As soon as you walk in the door they are offering you a taste of everything. I haven't bought any meat from them yet, but they said when I do, if I am not happy with the meat to just come back and tell them and they will give me my money back.

Thank you everyone for the information.
Rapture, I have been lucky enough to have some of that Jersey corn and tomatoes you spoke of. We use to vacation in NJ and would never come home without bags of corn and tomatoes. Maryland is good but can't compare to Jersey.
I am thrilled to hear that I will not be giving up fresh local produce. Burr, I look forward to the peaches. The peaches we get here can sometimes be mistaken for rocks. It sounds like, with the heat and dry weather, I may have to wait until next season for that though. It seems like the Myrtle Beach area has everything one could want and more. I can't wait to get there. Thanks again everyone!

It's expensive outside of July/August. The corn IS good, tho!! Don't be overly excited to move here, trust me lol. I was at first. That quickly wore off...took about 2 weeks!
