Surfside Beach?
My wife and I are looking to semi retire to SC. WE are currently looking in Surfside Beach at The Surfside Beach Club, a new developement by Bill Clark Homes. WE were pretty impressed by the homes and the prices, however we are not well versed in construction or relocation by any means.
We read some pretty bad things about Bill Clark Homes on the www, so we are interested in getting some more opinions, feedback and comments about BC Homes and the Surfside beach area in general. We went to the beach during Memorial day weekend and found it crowded and not very accessible. Also there wasn't much to the beach at this point on the Grand Strand. We are familiar with Myrtle Beach (around 48th Ave North) and like the beach there since it is quiet and there is parking every block.
Any info would be much appreciated.

first thing to do is to check to see if you can get homeowner's insurance, and how much is it.

Surfside Beach is a wonderful beach. Did you try the pier area for parking and beach access? There's also another pier further south, at Garden City, with parking underneath and beach access. The southern end of Pawley's Island has a nice beach access also.
I've heard nothing but good things about Bill Clark homes and I've heard from other people that The Surfside Beach Club is very nice.

I'm not familiar with this builder but I emailed a couple friends that are realtors to get their opinion and what they have heard.

Get there early on the weekends, it gets crowded fast.
I would recommend the beach at Huntington Beach State Park. They do have a fee, but get the state park's pass and it'll be worth it. You can use it at any of the parks, including the one in Myrtle Beach. The beach is pristine and parking is good. There are also bathroom facilities, too.

I can't help you with Bill Clark but I love Surfside and if I knew I could get homeowners insurance and at a decent price I'd buy there in a NY minute

I know someone that lives right next to there and a couple agents that have sold homes there. This is the feedback I have heard...
The homes are nice, but I get the feeling it's like living in Nevada...it's similiar to a desert! No trees at all! The homes are nice and the lots are decent size. Some on one section are all identical and are attached with brick fences, almost like "Florida Style" homes, meaning more of a patio home feel. The builder has a good reputation and has built many homes and condos in this area.
Keep in mind this is what I've heard but it's really a matter of opinion about the builders. I hear good and bad about all of them, including Beazer, D.R Horton etc...

I live in Surfside Beach Club
I live in Surfside Beach Club. I have personally had a number of problems with my home, but contribute just about all of it to the plumber that was used at the beginning. They didn't get him out of here soon enough. Bill Clark Homes finally got their act together and I haven't heard of anyone complaining lately. I actually love the neighborhood and location. They are planning on putting a traffic light at the entrance on 17 Bypass & they are planning an overpass at Glenns Bay Rd. & 17 Bypass that will eventually relieve traffic on Glenns Bay Rd. Right now, I love the fact that the community is gated and I am the only one that can "cut through" the neighborhood if traffic is backed up! The prices are way down, so now is the time to buy. I bought before they started construction in 2005 and I lost all the equity in my house when the housing market crashed. You can get a better deal on a brand new house than buying one already built. Ask me anything...

As Surfside Gal mentioned the traffic on Glenns Bay is an issue and even Bypass 17 during peak travel times. It will be years before the traffic is relieved. There are many nice communities in the Surfside area. You should always check on the HOA fees and by-laws when looking at private communities. Some of these are quite restrictive which may not appeal to all buyers.
