Tell him to check with Dargan or AO Hardee. Might not get exactly what he's looking for, but they are BIG companies...

Also might check with RH Moore.

I make decent money for SC standards. I didn't settle either. Cheap employers want you to work for $ 7-8 per hour. Could they feed their families on that? I think not.

Which is why you have to get into someplace decent. I know it is hard but keep on trying! Get your foot in the door at HGTC or CCU or HTC or the City of MB or Conway. Those are the jobs you need to aim for. The benefits are good there.

Construction is another story. I'm not going to bash anyone here. I will say that my husband worked for RH Moore for seven years. They were okay but unless you are salaried, you don't get paid when it rains.

bigmistake is on a distinguished road
my wife, 4 month old daughter and I moved here (murrells inlet) a little over 3 weeks ago from south florida. (west palm beach). we are going back to florida. jax. it seems we have wasted our time and money. florida was good to us. what were we thinking? my advice to anyone considering moving to the myrtle beach area is: be absoultely sure you have a job, BEFORE u move here. the good paying jobs are not here. move to florida.

Bigmistake-
Did you take a leap of faith and move here BEFORE having a job ironed out?

Sound like you did then it didn't pan out. Not the best situation, but it would be no different anywhere else you take that same leap of faith.

Best of luck when you get back to Florida. I'm seeing folks moving UP from Florida all the time. Trying to escape the heat/humidity, taxes, Insurance woes, etc.

I AGREE, I AGREE, I AGREE, I AGREE!

Research is the most important thing that someone can do prior to moving, rrufast. Everything you say is true here. I'd also like to throw in my 2 cents while this subject is being brought up.

Fact: If you currently make $25 per hour at your current job up north, expect half of that for the same position here. Salaries are lower here in the lovely state of South Carolina. It's a fact. There are some really good paying jobs out here to be found but having unrealistic expectations are going to hurt job seekers. There are really great companies in this area that have excellent benefits but that may require you to take a pay cut an even an entry level position just to get your foot in the door. I could go on and on about this subject........

Fact: The county and city websites have alot of useful information. I can't even begin to count how many people I come in contact with that complain about recreation for their kids or for themselves and other issues about the DMV and other public services. It just takes a little effort in obtaining information prior to moving here to know what to expect.

The same goes for housing. Most people say that homes are cheaper here. I am a land and a home owner so I have not experienced anything outside of that. However, if you were to ask someone I know from Michigan who is currently a homeowner here, they would tell you that they live a heck of a lot cheaper here than they did up there.

Last but not least - South Carolina is what it is. It is a state you either love or hate. Personally, I love it. This state if part of me. Always has been, always will be. But the reality of it is that people are going to be in a huge culture shock when they move here. It's different and you either grow to accept it or move on. Again, unrealistic expectations come in to play for those who think it is going to be similiar to what they are used to. Totally different state, totally different rules, totally different people, totally different lifestyle, totally different pay, totally different cost of living, totally different...period.

I could go on and on but it's late and I'm tired......

We did the same thing except we lasted 5 months. I can't say it was completely a waste of money because it was a great experience for our family. We actually tried to find work in Fla. before we moved back to Phx but came up with nothing. We are doing extremely well in Phx now even better than before we left. I sure do miss the beach though I wish I could have stayed.

You also have to remember that there are still a lot of good ol' boys in Horry County, and there are also relatively few good jobs. If you just moved to Myrtle Beach from out of town and the other candidate for the job you want is Bubba Smith's son who just graduated from Coastal Carolina, then Bubba Smith's son is getting the job.

Praise GOD for that! As a Tar Heel born and bred I've seen my beloved North Carolina ruined by people who have turned it into something that it was never meant to be. I hope that my South Carolina born children don't see the same thing happen to their home state.
