If you previously lived in FL as a FL resident, and you move back(retired) years later, does the 6 month residency requirement (for whatever it is needed) still pertain?

I assume you have legal residency in your current/non-FL state...
If you want to make FL your new legal residence state, you do the domicile process as detailed in this and other threads.

That '6 month residency' that I wrote of in previous posts, is the hurdle many states use for recent former residents, who are ex-pats from that previous state. IOW, for example: I am legal rez of NC. I live in FL ~5 months a year. For me to become legal FL resident, I would have to do the domicile, car reg, voter reg, etc. Once I am full fledged FL resident Florida really does not 'check up' on me as to how many days I actually reside in FL.

However, my former legal state, North Carolina, may choose to pursue my former residency vis a vis, requiring me to prove I was 'out of NC' for 6 months and day, once I became a FL resident. Some states are more aggressive than others, and it is often based on previously earned income, and thus, the taxes one paid to his/her 'former legal state.'

FL really does not care where its residents spend their time; one's former state may care, if they think one is pushing the system, and dodging taxes. It is all about the revenue.

OK Friday I hope to be in the Collier County government office obtaining a Florida license for my wife and I, registering our 2010 GMC Terrain in Florida, doing voter registration and applying for domicile residency. I was online trying to get a handle of the fee cost of all this without much luck. It looks like the DL's will be $48 a piece. Other fees are a mystery at this point. Any educated guesses as to the other fees we will incur?

We just went through this in Volusia County, the vehicle reg. was the costliest, cost almost $500 per car. Be sure you transfer your car insurance to a Florida agent before you apply for transfer.

$500 per vehicle?! Is that mostly a one time fee? I am assuming GEICO will be able to cover us in Florida (switching from GEICO-NJ coverage to GEICO-FL). Anyone know that that is true?

Don't go with GEICO. We had them in NY for 20 years. They wanted to increase our yearly fees by almost $1,000 in Florida. Do a few comparisons. $500 to register a car? When I first moved here it was around $250 for 2 years, which included getting specialty plates. Right now mine $77 for one year. $500 sounds way too much.

OK, suggestions for Florida auto insurance please (two drivers, one vehicle, no kids, both over 55)?

Or, sites to compare rates??

I've started getting quotes. So far GEICO is the cheapest. < $300 for 6 months.

It's over $400 per car to register. They've changed the fees, Jo.

It can be Googled.

We have our FL house ins with this agency...a good friend started the biz, and his son runs it now. No idea if thier rates will be 'good' on car ins, but they saved us considerably on our FL house ins. (Our cars are reg'd in NC).

Other than a possible quote for you, I have no dawg in this hunt...
