Purchasing a used car from a used car dealer in Naples.

Buyer is out of state.
Car paid for. Title mailed to buyer at buyers home state.
Buyer will get tags, plates, insurance, etc. out of state -- home state.
Then travel to Florida to drive used car to home state.

Question:

The used car dealer requests a copy of drivers license of buyer. Is this necessary in Florida? From the used car dealer.
Can anyone explain why used car dealer demands a copy of drivers license of buyer? Payment has cleared.

Since I have no experience of purchasing a vehicle in Florida, I'm afraid I cannot help.

I do have a sightly related question: I have a car in NJ (with SC plates) that I would like to trade in on a new vehicle. The new vehicle will end up in Florida with Florida plates. Would I be able to buy a new vehicle in Jersey (or even South Carolina) and tell the dealer I will register the vehicle in Florida? Or will/can the dealer obtain the Florida registration for me?

Unit-

I'm not sure but it is proably in connection with the issuance of a temporary tag. Look here: http://www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/DealerHandbook.pdf

TM-

Your situation is no different than buying a vehicle on Ebay-I've bought three this way.

You will need to pay for a temp tag to drive it home. You will pay no sales tax at purchase but you will pay sales tax when you register it in FL.

When the car is in FL drive it to the tag place. They will need to verify the VIN and odometer in person. Give them your license, sales receipt, proof of FLORIDA insurance. Don't forget your checkbook.

The car will be titled, registered, taged, plates, insurance out of state before pick up.

Buyer will bring permanent plates and proof of insurance that are not Florida. No temp. tags needed.

I still don't know why used car dealer needs to copy drivers license. Buyer can provide proof of who he is with a passport.
