Quick question, since the everglades area of FL has predators such as aligators and snakes, do people just not go hiking out in the glades area? Do you need to be with a guide if you are in a nature preserve near water?

Excuse the ignorance, I am from MN and we love running and walking paths along our ponds and we don't have any predators to fear in our nature preserves. Wolves, Bears, etc are afraid of people. So are there no hiking paths close to waters?

Make sure you visit this place: Shark Valley Visitor Center - Everglades National Park (Shark Valley). 17 mile loop through the Everglades. More gators than you can count. All of the Florida birds and other wildlife. I suggest biking it, but it can be walked or you can pay to ride a tram.

I agree with tmozer, Shark Valley is a fantastic place to ride around, I done it about 8 years ago and I was very impressed with all the great wildlife you see, gators everywhere.

Thinking about it (Shark Valley), I might be incorrect on the distance. Maybe it was 12 miles..... Anyway, very nice.

All I remember is that it was a pleasant ride, it didn't feel like it was that far, there is a look out point about half way through in case you need to relax your legs ) You can rent the bikes so you don't have to bring your own.

I believe it is 14 miles and concur, it's a great walk or biking trail with plenty of wildlife to see. Was out there late Oct early Nov and the weather was perfect, not to warm lower humidity and no bugs!

We were at Shark Valley once in December during a dry spell, so the animals seemed to congregate around the water holes near the trail. As a result, we saw a tremendous number of animals.

Later our relatives went back during the wet season and saw very few animals.

watch out the gators might eat your kid! ... kidding. We used to go hiking and kayaking in the swamps all the time. It's beautiful. Also make sure to visit the corksrew sanctuary.

We were at Corkscrew Sanctuary last weekend, saw loads of birds, baby gators and the owl. They have loads of volunteers walking around pointing out all the wildlife in case you miss it.
