Dear Friends,

Hello! I used to live in South Florida and had to put up with ants in the house on a regular basis. I'm from the North so it was not easy to get used to and it eventually sent me packing. Now, I would like to come back to FL for many reasons, but I'm hesitant because I'm afraid I can't handle the ants. How is it in Naples? If I rent a house or an apartment is it going to be a concern? Please let me know! The ants in Hollywood wouldn't go away! Any responses would be great , but please have a heart!

Your right about that! I have to do things in NY to be prepared for Spring time every year. Its just that I lived on the 15th floor of a high rise in Hollywood and low and behold they got in the windows and in the kitchen despite my best cleaning efforts. I just wondered if they can be controlled, I guess your saying that "yes" they can. Thanks for that.

No need to be afraid because ants are everywhere! But there are a lot of natural safe ways to get rid of them. At my current place I have had a problem with ants, the tiny tiny sweet ants one time. That one time was because I had a short term very sloppy houseguest (who left food in the trash in the bathroom) which attracted the ants.

Prevention outside.....of a house...circle the perimeter of the house with chalk. They won't cross a chalkline. Also spray mist all windows doors cervices with peppermint oil (works for spiders and mice too). On the inside spray the oil in cervices , windows doors. Also you can sprinkle a little cinnamon and cloves inside baseboards cabinets.

If after all that you see ants....get some Terro, available at grocery store, and put on a piece of stiff paper and place where you see the ants. They will eat it , take back to nest and within a week or so they will be gone.

The big fat ants you might see here can also be carpenter ants, another story all together. They can make nest anywhere. If you see inside house, you will need an exterminator, because it suggests they have found some rotting wood and a nice home to make a next. Usually you will see them outside around fallen limbs etc.

If you rent in a high rise, they should be controlling insects. ASK what their pest control program is and how often it's followed. If the answer isn't satisfactory, keep looking.
