In Collier County, you have to have a PERMIT to have a garage sale. Do you agree with this law? (Naples: house)

Yes, in Collier County you have to get a PERMIT to put a couple tables in your driveway and sell YOUR stuff. I'm curious if anyone here agrees with this law and if so, why? If you disagree with this law, why?

In collier kids selling Lemonades have to have a permit. Several have been shut down over the past few years for not... They can't sign their names but they have to have a permit.. Does any of it make sense?

There is more to the kids' lemonade stand story. Back in 2003, a 6-year-old, and her friends', lemonade stand was shut down for violating a Naples city ordinance. The children had been frequently operating the lemonade stand for about two years, at the end of a driveway, until police officers shut down it down when a neighbor complained. The lemonade stand was quickly back up again after city officials helped the family out by granting them a permit. The rule is designed to control temporary businesses. For example, the city would not want a hot dog vendor to set up a stand on Fifth Avenue South.

The city says it hasn't enforced the rules on children and charities for many years, but if a sale is set up in a commercial location, you need a $60 permit in the city and a $200 permit in the county.

I understand why laws are on the books at times. But those in power need to exercise common sense. If someone is having a "garage sale" every single week and selling brand new items, then yes, shut down the thrift store. But as a 36 year old adult, I should not have to ask permission to sell my stuff once a year on my driveway just as a child shouldn't have to worry about having some brute shutdown their lemonade stand which is teaching them a host of good skills and getting them out from behind their video games.

I had a code enforcement officer pull up my signs today then ask me for my permit. When I told him that's absurd, he threatened to call a deputy. I told him, "DO IT!" He got on the phone and I went and got my video camera. I was looking forward to receiving a ticket for having a garage sale but I assume the sheriff's office told them he was being a moron because they never showed up.

In my opinion, it is the job of every citizen to exercise civil disobedience and not put up with these bullies who are, "Just doing their job." And then work to make sure these laws are taken off the books or only enforced when there is a true, common sense need.

If the County has enough time to go around shutting down garage sales, then they have too many code enforcement officers. I'd prefer to have lower property taxes and not having to ask big brother's permission to sell some plant pots and screwdrivers I no longer need.

I do believe the girl who set up the lemonade stand also had cancer or her sister did at one point. That was another one, or the same one its been years. Also a few years back the kid with the tree house that was made to tear it down because he didn't have a permit to build it was in the news here I remember that one. Point is its bullying at its best by crappy crabby old people here who come for 6 months and wanna run the rest of our lives. And I would NEVER buy a $60 permit just for a lemonade stand, the city has made a fool out of parents by making them do that and we merrily go alone with it.
