Can anyone tell me what the surf is generally like in this area? Yeah, I'm a bit surf-obsessed, but that's what retiring the ocean is all about to me -- crashing waves -- and I'm having a hard time reconciling myself to the calm Gulf or Panhandle, although that seems to be where the better cities are in Florida...

The gulf is known for being very calm. Some days it looks like glass.

All the experienced surfers surf the east coast of Florida mostly around Cocoa Beach...that is the zone that gets the waves...but even then they wait for a storm to blow through and stir things up. The rest of the time is "bunny waves". The west coast, Naples in particular, never gets waves big enough to surf. My son is a surfer lives in Orlando. Sometimes he can get a day in on the east coast, but mostly goes down to Costa Rica.
