Hello! We want to leave miserable PA and live on the gulf. Trying to decide on best place to finish raising family. We have four boys ages 8, 12, 15 and 17. So we need a really safe environment for them. We are looking for a small town with lots of places to walk, ride bikes and lots of outdoor/ nature activities. We want to be near beach or at least within 15 or 30 min from beach. We are also looking for a place where it isn't to hard to obtain employment. I know some areas in florida struggle with that.
Any suggestions?

Are you buying a home or renting? What is your budget for housing?

My advice is to get a job before making the leap. There are many great family areas in Naples, and many are within easy reach of great beaches - but it's not cheap and housing costs are on the rise once again. Rentals are also expensive - even to the point where local service industry workers have trouble finding affordable places to live.

It's hard to give any specifics without knowing your budget and where you'll be working. The Naples area is spread out, so you'll want to settle in an area that won't tie you up for long commute times. (Granted, it's nothing like commuting in Philly if you are familiar with that...but still!)

What the others said but be aware Naples is a retirement community. I wouldn't call it bike riding friendly, our roads are pretty dangerous. You can also cross of small town. In season we can reach over a million people between residents, snowbirds and tourists. Any commute you have in season you can add between 30-45 mins one way onto it. Being that close to the beach will require a monthly budget of close to $2400 for a home rental and upwards of probably $350,000 for buying (within the 15 min) for anything liveable and safe. Don't expect to find much of anything within 30 mins of the beach for under $250,000-$275,000 that will be in a good school district and close to anything like stores etc.
