I have 2.5 acres east of Naples that I'd love to put a small log home on. I went to several offices in Collier County and no one there said that it was not allowed. Has anyone ever had one built in Florida? Any problems finding an actual builder, insurance or construction loan problem? Any problems with the actual home because of the climate? Thanks for any help!

Building a log home, or any other mostly wood home in Florida is the dumbest choice you could make, for too many reasons to fully contemplate.
Among them are:

Fire hazard
Tropical climate
Rot, termites, ants
Insurance costs would kill you
Collier county zoning/regs/codes

Did I saw this was a dumb idea?

I would look online for companies that offer such log homes.

Any home is a fire hazard if it's in the boonies and not woods and not near any fire hydrants

I'm sure they have the logs treated to prevent termites

If it's in the middle of nowhere you will have to add a well and septic system.

You can get concrete log systems like EverLog, but I have no idea about wind rating. That's what I'd be concerned about.

There are a handful of log homes in the rural areas of north central florida (Lake City, Gainesville, Ocala). If you google you'll come up with a few log home builders in this area too.

I don't think it's a smart construction for Naples that can get 150+ mile winds. North Central Florida doesn't get that kind of intensity.

Assuming a bank will loan you money to build a log home down there and you can manage insurance in collier county you might as well start with talking with the county building permit department about log homes and any issues then talk with a few log home builders and see if they meet the counties building code requirements .

I would not build a log home down there but that has to do with the homes in general for ME . Beautiful to look at , but higher upkeep and cost to build and repair and logs settle or shrinkage for a number of years and inner supports have to be adjusted occasionally .

I have no real issues with a wood framed homes in general when well built and reinforced it can hold up to hurricane very well or at least as well as your average CBS home . 42 years experience building wood framed homes 22 in SW Fl . Thanks to simpson strong-tie its easier to do today reinforce a wood framed home .

Wood framed homes my wife and I built to live in 30 and 40 years ago are still holding up well maybe thanks to liberal use of Borax both as a spray for the wood and as a dry powder sprinkled on any horizontal surfaces used just before insulation . It kills termites .

when you say, log home, do you mean a home made from actual logs?
yeah, great idea! ...not.

BEST most ridiculous idea EVER.

I have seen ads on the interstate for Florida Cracker Style Homes. I think they are made out of cypress wood. They probably hold up very well. The picture I saw looked great-wrap around porch, overhanging eves etc
