Hello all,

Over this last year I have visited Nashville twice and truly love it there (currently in southern California). I am planning on moving this summer and am curious if anyone can give advice on how much money I should save. Should I be prepared for 3 months? Possibly 6 or 9?

One of my long time friends is out there and has kindly offered a free room until I can find something permanent, but I do not want to be there more than a month or two since he is a newly wed and just generally don't want to take advantage of one of my closest friends.

I plan on hitting the ground running and am willing to do anything from washing dishes to digging ditches to get going until something more promising opens up. I also intend to continue schooling over there but most importantly need to support myself. I have a great resume and tons of work experience but again not looking for a professional/career job at this point in my life.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Bump.

Can anyone shed light on how plentiful jobs in the $9-15 per hour are?

Not looking so much for a dollar amount to bring but how long should I be prepared to support myself for?

IMO, you should have absolutely no problem finding a job with that kind of pay.

I would recommend being prepared to support yourself for 6 months, then if you find something sooner it's gravy. That being said, you should be able to find a $10/hour job if you want to work.

Thanks!

Will this particular job market change much in the fall once school starts? Based on my income/savings I am predicting a move in August/ September?

It might be a bit better because of kids going back to school/college.

$9-$15 is really two separate job markets. $9-$11 are plentiful but there are always a ton of applicants. This pay grade doesn't usually attract the highest quality employees so turnover is usually high. No offense intended. I know there are exceptions. $12-$15 gets you more into the skilled trades and those jobs are less plentiful the higher the wage. The job market shouldn't change a whole lot based on school.

Completely agreed. $10/hour is the sweet spot for no degree type jobs. You'll have a 300% easier time finding a job if you can get your friend to get you in somewhere for an interview. Connections are how you get a job in this world, especially when you are one of 100 applying for a job at the Old Navy.

I agree 100%. Apparently he is good friends with the manager at 6th Ave Skatepark (ideal job) and I also am friends with the nephew of Blackstone Brew owner. I am hoping for one of these to work in my favor but I'm glad I've received all of your input as I can't rely on those from so far away.
