Nashville vs. Memphis
I currently live in Mphs. born and raised. I am researching relocating. I have a few places to explore based on my career and my husbands'. My main question before researching anything else is this....is it any better than Memphis, or similar to Memphis at all? I do not know Nashville. I would definately be visiting the non-tourist areas to get to know it. Wish I had already as I have in-laws who are from Nashville and LOVE it. My only problem is I HATE Memphis. No offense to Memphians, mainly the government here I don't care for and the school systems are awful. Unless you can afford private school, or you can homeschool you're pretty much out of luck. I have two girls who will be in kindergarten and preschool when we move. I will not put them in school here. This is why I'm researching where to move. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Nashville is nothing like Memphis. Nashville is more cosmopolitan. Memphis has a slower pace, so slow, that my husband was on a local bus there and the driver got out, and took a 15 min break in Mcdonald's. I have not seen this anywhere in the country.Nashville has Art, Culture, and nonstop music, that can vary from a Symphony Orchestra to Country.
Memphis has lower home prices, but Nashville has lower property tax.
There are some good schools here and also some bad ones. We can stear you to the good ones.
Good Lick,

While I adore Nashville, I have to come to the defense of Memphis here. There are some amazingly beautiful areas of Memphis, and Memphis has just as much art and culture as Nashville. It's just a different kind of culture. The Memphis Symphony is just as renowned as Nashville's. Memphis has several art museums and some fabulous independent restaurants. Memphis also has a larger arthouse movie theater than Nashville. As for nonstop music, Memphis has that, too. It's just not country music.
But Memphis definitely has more crime and has higher property taxes. Also, your chances of finding a good school are much better in Nashville. And while Memphis has some beautiful neighborhoods (Central Gardens, Evergreen, Chickasaw Gardens, and others) they're never more than a few blocks away from a crack neighborhood. That's not the case in Nashville.
Still, there are lots of reasons to prefer Nashville over Memphis, but there are lots of reasons to like Memphis, too.

Dang, you kind of lost me at this line: "As for nonstop music, Memphis has that, too. It's just not country music."
How's this sound? "As for nonstop music, Nashville has that too, it's just not hip hop and rap."
See my point? We both know better.

Part of the perception may be that it takes a while to acclimate. My daughter is married to a man from Columbia and has lived there a number of years. She had a hard time getting used to sincere friendliness which as you know usually doesn't happen much in Michigan. Most of the time people who are overly friendly or show an interest in you personally up there are looked at with a hint of caution. Although most northerners probably don't mean to be rude we come off that way because we're always in a hurry and used to employers with "dime a dozen" attitudes towards their people. I find that down here the attitude is more appreciative from employers and people just seem to be more sociable. Probably something to do with "right to work" verses Unions. I don't know. As for your buddy in the bar, hey, goofballs are everywhere. God help us.
Although Nashville has it's own set of big city problems it doesn't appear to have the epidemic of meth addicts that Atlanta has been plagued with or the startling amount of gang activity (both organized and street gangs) that world class cities all over the world seem to suffer (Detroit is an example we can both relate to). I'm sure there's more going on here than meets the eye but at least it's not "in your face" like other places.
Don't know what to tell ya my friend. I like it here, warts and all. Not everyone will and that's okay too. Hope you find your own perfect fit.

I certainly do know better. Memphis has a lot more blues and jazz than hip hop and rap.

I just relocated from Dallas to Franklin and have been very pleased with the quality of the schools. I think your biggest problem will be housing affordability (compared to Memphis or Dallas) but those are choices we make to give our kids what we want them to have. I never considered anywhere other than Williamson County so I'll let others provide more details on neighboring counties.

Hey Shining star, what part of Dallas did you move from? I'm originally from Carrollton (born and raised).

Hey UNT_Eagle! We lived in Carrollton (near Josey & Trinity Mills) for two years and in Flower Mound for six. Small world!
