I am from Richmond, Virginia where I'm used to lots of southern hospitality, so I figured going out to Nashville I would find the same. I didn't because Nashville is much faster paced than Richmond and has more people from all over.
The first time I visited Nashville, I was almost disenchanted. Im a musician- so naturally it felt very intimidating. I felt overwhelmed by the hussle and bustle of it. I felt like a rooster out of a coup.
The 2nd time- I tried exploring it more- and it wasn't as bad. I got to get more of the feel of the town. I visited the Parthenon and Andrew Jackson's home. I discovered that Nashvillians really appreciate their history.
The 3rd time- I loved it ! I got to see the Ryman, Country Music Hall Of Fame, Belle Meade, and all the tourist stuff. I got to meet some locals. They were very warm and friendly. I picked up a since that Nashville felt like a 2nd home to me.
Now- I just got back from my 4th visit to Nashville. I'm in love ! I went downtown and visited the beautiful library. I found some cool internet cafes and coffee shops. I went out to Opryland and the great Opry Mills mall. Its super neat. I finally got to play the Bluebird Cafe and Borders Bookstore. I visited Hendersonville, Gallatin and the surrounding areas. I love Vanderbilt U. area.
This time I spent a week in Nashville. You really can't get a clear idea of a place from just a short visit.
My point is- first impressions can be very misleading ! Mine certainly was of Nashville. I love Nashville !

If you lived in Brentwood or Franklin you would be in anywhere USA -it is not Nashville - hell it doesn't even feel like the south...and the rich inhabitants, few of which speak with a southern accent keep it that way.

I always thought speaking southern was a way of refinement. I'm sure glad I don't speak like a yankee. God bless their hearts, but its like nails on a chalk board.

I was in Nashville for several months due to evacuation from hurricane Rita. I am from New Orleans and I now live in the Atlanta area. Nashville was a very friendly place. My whole family was surprised. Because we are black we wrongly associated country music culture with racism. People of all races were very nice. The music scene rivals New Orleans. We got a paper from the hotel that lists all of the music clubs. There is every kind of live music in Nashville. You can hear reggae, soul, blues, jazz and many other types. We would have stayed, but we missed living near water, and my Mother had terminal cancer in Atlanta. We are moving from Atlanta to Sarasota soon, but we LOVE Nashville, and would consider a move if hurricanes run us out of Sarasota. Check out John Henry's on Jefferson street, it's in the hood but worth the trip. We loved the restaruants in the Green Hills area and the children loved the whole area around West End and Vanderbilt.

I'm from Nashville and no one I know hardly ever goes to 2nd Avenue or Lower Broadway... Locals do not identify with it. It is too much a "Tourist Trap," serving up "countrified expectations" to the starry-eyed Opry fans...
Nashville has a great local art gallery scene, and lots of music other than country. There are great places to eat, drink and meet real Nashvillians.
You just got "trapped."
Next time you come through, let me know and I'll plot your strategy toward seeing my Nashville.

We like Nashville better than Atlanta. We went to Atlanta years ago and will not go back unless it is necessary for some reason. My most vivid memory of Atlanta is a 2.5 hour parking lot on the interstate. If that's world class, you can have it.
We have been to Nashville several times and will probably go back several more times. Great place to spend a week at a timeshare. We really enjoyed the Cowboy Church on Sunday morning. We went to the Elvis show, met J. Cash's sister when she did a private concert for us, had a private concert by T. Graham Brown and rode the Andrew Jackson Boat and went on the star tour, attended a beach party beside the pool and had pie and ice cream with live music, went to the Hermitage, had an ice cream sundae party and went to a spa party. Had no experience in any bar, because we didn't go to one. We did spend some time shopping at the Opryland Hotel. Now that was neat!
Nashville is one of our favorite places.

A Few New Points To Consider
Nashville is probably the largest healthcare hub in the southeast. Not only is the Vanderbilt University Medical Center here, but HCA (the nation's largest hospital system) is based here. The practical effect of this is that there are large numbers of highly educated transplants in the Nashville area. Any opinions to the effect that "you have to like country music to like Nashville" are completely inaccurate. In fact, country music is such an "industry" rather than an "art", that its influence in the city beyond tourist traps is negligible. However, there are high numbers of musicians from all genres in the area, MOST of which are NOT country.
The biggest drawbacks in my mind are: poor public transportation and the fact that Nashville is not close to mountains or the ocean (it really is situated poorly in a geographic sense IMO). However, if these are not important to you, then I give Nashville a pretty high rating, and I have lived in the Northeast and Rocky Mountain regions.
