Finns (or Estonians)
Greetings good people,
This is my first post. My name is Veikko and my family moved to the U.S. last year from a small village on the outskirts of Tampere, Finland area. We originally moved to New York City, hated the culture and people there and escaped a 6 month lease in search of a place more similar to our homeland. Now, we live in Priest Lake/Hermitage area of Nashville region. I am simply wondering if ANYONE could in ANY way assist me with ANY information regarding the presence of other Finns or Estonians in the area? I've seen signs of Russians, Germans, Ukrainians, Swedes, and many of people apparently proud of their Scottish heritage (along with hordes of non-European ethnic groups). Where are the Finnish (or even Estonian) people in this area? Do they exist? My neighbor said he has seen a couple of cars with Finnish flag stickers...

Get in touch with the Tennessee Foreign Language Institute:
Tennessee Foreign Language Institute - TFLI - serving the World, located in Nashville, TN.
They occasionally offer classes in Finnish and use native speakers as their teachers. They should be able to tell you about other Finns in the Nashville area.
Good luck!

Hello
Hey there,
welcome to Tn! I hope you find some good people to get in contact with here.
I actually spent a summer in Estonia about 9 years ago with a college ministry outreach in Parnu and parts of Tallinn. Would love to connect with you sometime..

An idea if you like hockey.
Welcome to Nashville. I am sure this summer is reminding you of Finland!
A strange way to possibly contact Finns/Estonians in Nashville is to go to Predators game. Take a Finnish &/or Estonian flag to the Sommet Center for a game and wave it around some. Also, wear a Finnish or Estonian national team jersey/sweater or a Finnish League jersey like one from Ilves. You can even go tomorrow, July 19, for the Predators Rally. My guess is a Finn or Estonian who saw their flag might come to up to talk to you. Of course, it would help if you like hockey! I have sat next to some Swedes at a game last year so there are Scandanavians in Nashville.
Kimmon Timonen, a Finn, was a star for the Preds, but he took $6 million/year to play in Philadelphia with his brother. I have seen Timonen's Finnish national team jersey worn in Nashville.Next year, Pekka Rinne, a Finn will probably be the backup goalie this upcoming season in Nashville.

Niko Snellman is from Tampere who has signed with the Preds and may be in Nashville in a few years.

NashVol is correct -we have ran into a lot of other Finns at Preds games! And plan to be there this year as well.. There are a few Finns that I know of in Nashville, but not as many as I would have thought.

How far back before it doesn't count any more? I'll be moving to Nashville this spring, and my grandmother was the youngest of 9 and the only one of her siblings to NOT be born in Estonia.
