? about Murfreesboro and surrounding areas
My husband and I are planning on moving to Murfreesboro or a surrounding area. We now live in Englewood, FL about an hour and a half south of Tampa. We just got married this past march we are 21 and 22 years old, we can not afford to live here anymore. We have been looking at Murfreesboro for along time and are planning to move in April 2008. My big questions are where can we live outside of the boro that is cheaper then living in the boro? We want to live somewhere safe. We will be renting for a while, so any help on where to find houses to rent would be great. I have Family that lives in Smithville so living on that side of the boro would be great. One other question what is getting a job like in this area? We will be looking for general jobs that don't require much experience. Is this a good place for us to move?

First - this is probably going to get more attention in the general Tennessee section where it was. Nashville is a good hour from Murfreesboro. I work in Nashville, drive through Murfreesboro and on another hour everyday to get home.
As for other areas there:
North of Murfreesboro is: Walterhill,Lascassas,Cainsville,Norene,Bairdsmill, Gladeville,Shop Springs
*I didn't go any further north than I-40
East of Murfreesboro:
Readyville, Milton, Auburntown, Statesville, Watertown, Commerce, Brush Creek, Liberty, Gassaway, Dowelltown, Hickman, Lancaster, Gordonsville, New Middleton, Silver Point, Woodbury
More south / southeast of Murfreesboro :
Rucker, Christiana, Fosterville, Bradyville, Gossburg, Beechgrove, Hoodoo, Deason, Bell Buckle, War Trace, Fairfield, Normandy, Summitville, Morrison, Smartt, Green Hill, Dibrell
*I didn't include anything west of 231 or 55.
We moved from Florida too and love it. One of the reasons was the cost of living. We both had good jobs and worked as much OT as we could get our hands on and still struggled. Now we're living on my paycheck alone and get along as well as we did there. Cost of living; def better!!
Rentals are hard to find - just about everyone up here owns. Just check the local papers - they are all of about 6 pages big. Any rentals that come up will be in there.
As for safety, no worries. Compared to Florida this place is incredibly safe. Shortly after moving up our daughter bumped a chair against our front door which was about solid plate glass and shattered it. We've also got a glass storm door that works fine, so we've just not replaced it in the year we've been here. Don't lock the doors at all or anything.
As for jobs, if you want a really good paying job, Nashville is the way to go. I make more in Nashville than I did in Florida. But if you're looking for something close to home, I'd suggest the state employment office. We're right outside of McMinnville and nearly every single job that's available is through them. The company's here don't hire HR people - they just let the state do all the work for them.
Lastly - the prices are on the rise, so really keep a close eye on it. If you're getting in a bad pinch there you may want to take a trip up here for a few days to check things out. We came up to look around and see what we thought and check out jobs and such. We'd planned on moving in the next 2 to 6 months. We wound up finding everything so perfect we bought a house, went home and told the kids to pack their things and were here in 3 weeks!

You might find rentals in M'Boro cheaper than surrounding areas.
Just something to consider.

Honestly I think you would be fine. I was born and raised in Murfreesbro but currently work and about to move to Nashville.
You can find a place to rent with the specs you mentioned for somewhere around 800-1200 depending on what you want. Check Craigslist.com and search Tennessee/Nashville/apts-housing. Murfreesboro listings are under them. You can find good deals on Craigslist. Also check the Nashville scene.
As far as jobs...you should be fine too. Here's the good thing about Murfreesboro or the Mid TN area period. If you don't mind a 30-60min drive, you have quite a few options. If you don't find anything in Murfreesboro, there's Nashville, Antioch, Smyrna, LaVergne, Franklin, Brentwood, CoolSprings, Mt. Juliet, Tullahoma, Spring Hill, Columbia and other little cities/towns that may have things available...but I dare say with the options I mentioned and the types of jobs you're looking for, you'll have no problems.

Love It Here
We just moved here from IL and love it so far, WAY CHEAPER LIVING WAY CHEAPER. There are about 5 homes for rent or sale in the area we live in in M'boro. We are in Evergreen Farms. 3bed/2.5 bath, 2 stories nice yard, park right behind us. Very nice area. We used the Daily News Journal and the Murfreesboro Post to find our house. Hope you find something great and welcome!!!
One thing that totally caught me by surprise - nor registration/book fees to get your kids in school. It was all free. In IL this year would have cost me about $250 just for registration, not counting supplies, clothes etc. And yes that is for public schools for 2 kids.

My husband and I just got back from our visit to Murfreesboro and we loved it there. Everyone was very helpful and kind, and we can not wait to be a part of such a wonderful community. I have a few more questions, we are newly weds and are in our twenties and are moving to Murfreesboro to start a family. We really want to be a part of the community and not just be someone who moved for a cheaper house. Is there any groups or organizations we could be a part of to help us meet people who also want to do things to be part of the community? Our other questions is we are really interested in living in Evergreen Farms. Is Evergreen Farms deed restricted or do you pay fees for living in the community? We have heard some good things about the verizon call center and are considering working there can anyone tell me about the call center? Does it pay well? Do they hire all the time or only certain times of the year? Thank you?
