I'm considering moving to Nashville for a job offer I have with HCA. My commute is here is about 1:30 and I'm not even going to Downtown Vancouver so I'd really like to start off in Nashville with a shorter commute in a nice neighborhood, but not someplace where I'm going to get ripped off on rent. Any suggestions as to a good neighborhood to look into where I can walk my dog at night and walk to the grocery store with my family on the weekends. Simple things like that. and of course low or lower crime rate.

Cheers, Paul

You could live nearly anywhere in the MSA (6,000 sq miles) and make an hour and a half commute.

There are some great places that should only be 20-40 minutes away, even during a heavy commuting time.

Nashville, unfortunately, doesn't have a plethora of walkable neighborhoods...but there are a few, mostly closer in to town. Not all of them are safe, however. The ones that are tend to be a bit higher in rent. I would expand my search beyond "walkable" to be honest. Safe isn't a problem. There are a number of nice, safe communities. Price, shopping opportunities, and traffic are some other factors to consider. Tell us a little bit more about yourself and your interests, and maybe we can find you a great fit.

The first neighborhoods that came to mind were West End/Vanderbilt and Green Hills/Belmont (all connected to each other, west and southwest of downtown). West End would put you very, very close to HCA (under 10 minutes, most of the time).

West End is the most built up and dense of the areas...but it's nothing compared to what you see in Vancouver. It's an area dominated by Vanderbilt University, office buildings, hotels, apartment buildings, churches, and the centerpiece: Centennial Park.

Green Hills is a trendy area with more shopping opportunities than West End (West End might have it beat with fine dining, though). Although not super walkable, it is possible to walk to the shops and stores from home. I would suggest biking, though. One nice thing about Green Hills is that the post office and library are both close and convenient to the community.

The only problem with this area in general is the rent and housing costs are a bit higher than they are elsewhere. However, coming from Vancouver, you may not find them to be all that bad.

You might want to consider Downtown Franklin too. Cute historic houses and sidewalks.

A lot will depend on whether you have kids, price range etc.
