With my luck, it would fly up inside and get stuck while I run screaming and shaking and trying to get rid of the cicada.

Don't you have one already? I didn't know we would need it but the home we bought last year has a screen porch on the back of the house. Perfect for watching the birds and now, the cicada.

No screens just a big empty deck and a couple of covered porches

Not for the cicadas...but they are nice to have to keep out mosquitos and flies (which I find are 100X more annoying than cicadas).

I'm glad that these things only come out every 13-17 years. The noise is just stupid and they fly around all the time. However, it is temporary, so no big deal. I hope they are happy! Actually, my head hurts from the sound!

I would recommend a screened in porch if you like sitting outside because there are bugs no matter where you are!

Yes, but not because of the cicadas so much as all the other annoying insects.

They happen every year here, too. But the ones we normally get come toward the middle or end of summer and these early ones are a different kind.

This is what we're hearing right now:

And this is what comes every year:

The annual cicadas are a little larger and, to my ears, almost as loud. Of course, there may simply be fewer of the annual cicadas so maybe they don't seem as loud.
