This is so sad. I can't believe they are shutting down West End:

Physical book stores are increasingly a thing of the past with online stores and Kindles. Hopefully it can be replaced by something else more sustainable.

Borders had a nice selection but I think their closing probably has less to do with e-readers than their incredibly high mark up compared to amazon and even Barnes and Noble. Also, I can only imagine the rent for that location!

I think the main reasons for shutting down those stores are rent related. I am only speculating, but both West End and Cool Springs are probably very high for rent. I thought West End would work out for them, because they don't have as much competition in the immediate area...

Well, at least there's still the Brentwood location.

Oh, and I agree that the markup is too high. You have to be a rewards member and get 30-40% discounts to make it worth it.

Nope, that closing was announced in the first wave last month.

i hope some great independents step up to provide a browse-able and decent selection. this is really getting me down.

Brentwood (not Cool Springs) has not been announced as a Borders that will be closing. They're probably keeping that one because I bet the rent is cheaper (it's a 30 year old or so building).

I would love to see the independents step up, but we took a big hit when Davis Kidd shut its doors.

Yes. I am afraid most independents would be fearful to enter the market in a bigger way (after seeing others pullout).

What especially stinks, in addition to losing the Borders, is the addition of 2 more big, vacant storefronts.

I wonder how long it will be before they fill either of the old Borders with something new. The loss of Davis Kidd certainly left a big void in the Green Hills Mall-- any word about businesses slated to move in there?

In one of the Tennessean articles, the owner of Bookman/Bookwoman in Hillsboro Village said they were thinking about expanding their selection to include more newer books...but I'm not sure if that will be any kind of trend.

However, one has to think with both Borders and Davis Kidd going out, there is definitely a space for the new book/media market in the Nashville area, especially in town.
