Hi all,

I'm going to be a 1st year phd student at VU starting this fall. I am looking to lease the Glen condo at 1706 18th ave s, which is very close to VU. I was wondering if anyone had any positive/negative opinions on these condos. I am a little bit suspicious because it seems to me that condo of this quality(all hardwood floor, 2 rooms, 2 tiled bathrooms, granite counter top, stainless steel appliances, above 1000 square ft comes to $1600/month) could go for more in this area... Any thoughts?(is this area livable without a car?)

Thanks

Hi suehlee,

I actually lived a couple of houses down from those condos. I can't tell you too much about them because, they were actually being built when I was living there, and people just moved in when I left Nashville. So one thing I can tell you is that they are fairly new.

As for the price that's about right. Nashville is not that expensive and I'm pretty sure those condos don't offer "luxury amenities" (Pool, Gym etc) compared to lets say the Bristol west end. They are just fancier Apartment, IMO.

As for a car, A lot of people will say that Hillsboro village is highly walkable and you don't need a car, I'm here to say that's a lie. For running small errands like going to the bank or to the post office or getting a quick bit to eat, the area is great for that since all those things are in walking distance. But if you want to go grocery shopping, to the mall or go somewhere anywhere around the city, especially on the weekend, you will need a car. The nearest grocery is harris teeter which is about a 20 min walk. Walking there is not the problem, walking back with your groceries up that damn hill in 90+ heat is not fun.

Hello Suehless, I own a condo at The Glen. There are a lot of Vanderbilt people that live there and they seem to be very satisfied. It is a great location for Belmont and Vanderbilt. As far as your question as to if it is livable without a car. Yes, you can get by without a car. This is about the best location you can live and not have a car (there are no other condos or apartmetns that are in a better location that makes it easier to live without a car). However, in Nashville the summers can get hot and the winters can get cold. So sometimes it is just nice to have a car. You can walk a couple of blocks and get a bus to the grocery store and to the mall.
