The hippest city in the South is either Asheville, NC or Athens, GA. I have heard them compared: Ashville is more hippie, Athens is more punk....Ashville is a bigger version of Athens. My pick is Athens. Athens feels more like the South. Outside of the city, which is tiny and relatively dense, you can find ****loads of cool, run-down or abandoned, old wooden houses (love-shacks along the Atlanta highway {the B-52's}). The city of Athens has a huge music and art scene. The rent there is amazingly cheap. And don't worry about living in a small town because there is a Trader Joe's in an Athens neighborhood called Five Points, and for all other amenities there is Atlanta, give or take, an hour away.
I am think about moving there (from Savannah), so I'm really excited about it. The rent is way cheaper and the art scene is way better, despite the fact that there is an Art school in here. You should check out Athens. Hope to see ya there
