Stop it! You know that scares Nashvillians more than tornadoes or a traffic jam on I-65.*

*With all due respects to Atlanta, my brother and sister-in-law live there and like it.

Why is it bad that people want to raise there standard of living? You should be thankful that our state is doing well.

No, my point is not to be sad about the rising the standard of living or that Nashville is doing well. I am very happy about those facts. There are downsides to growth that many see in Atlanta.

For example, commute times increase in to the city from the suburbs and going from suburb to suburb which used to take a few minutes takes 30 minutes to an hour. All open space becomes developed is a downside for some. Of course, there are plenty of benefits like more income!

For those that love this area, one of Nashville's charm is not being too big,but being big enough. I think those days are slipping.

That's it in a nutshell, isn't it-- nailing the sweet spot? Kinda like the Goldilocks economy, and the jury's still out on that one, too!

But Nashville seems to be doing better at it than Knoxville. Knoxville is bringing all the sprawl, traffic, inflated real estate prices (and the taxes that go with them) and transplanted retirees, without the jobs, young working professionals and cultural enhancements. Knoxville has a greater disconnect between income and housing prices than Nashville, and the influx of companies puts Nashville in a far better position to absorb the sticker shock of escalating RE. Knoxville, in comparison, is attracting few corporations and, in fact, had sizeable middle management layoffs just last week.

If we wanted Atlanta, we'd move there, right?
