...going down Portland Avenue and 21st Avenue South?

I was looking at Street View in Google Maps but couldn't discern if there were sidewalks the entire way and can't mentally recall it.

What other places can be walked to from Belmont University?
All I know about is Bongo Java.

I'm like 80 percent sure that the entire route is sidewalked.

That's (iirc) about a half-mile walk one-way -- maybe a little more. There are lots of places on 21st near the Belcourt that would be that same distance. Maybe try Fido or Bosco's? (You'll run into me at both, undoubtedly!)

You can walk to the businesses in 12South:

12South - Local Businesses (http://www.12south.org/localbusinesses.html - broken link)

Also, Belmont Bi-Rite is a little grocery store at 3116 Belmont Blvd- across from Christ the King. It's not somewhere you can hang out, but it's a good little local grocery store that carries regular grocery items and some special local products. They have a hot food area in the back and make a meat & 3 type lunch every day that is really good.
