We may be relocated to the Brentwood TN area and are interested in learning about real estate options in the area. Brentwood seems more expensive than other parts of TN. I'm wondering if there are nice towns surrounding Brentwood (20 minutes away) that are less expensive? (single family house). I am particularly interested in an older home or rustic/log cabin living, near hiking and water if possible. No kids in school, so that aspect is less important for us. Where we are now, I can walk into town, which is nice, and am near public transportation. We've loved other visits to parts of TN bordering VA. The Smokies are beautiful! We'd deeply appreciate any suggestions.

Brentwood is close in to Nashville, so your choices are limited within a 20 minute commute. Nolensville comes to mind, and possible the Grassland area. You might also consider Franklin; it's expensive too, but not as expensive as Brentwood. Also, out Highway 100 in Davidson/Williamson County (near Bellevue). That area is relatively close to Brentwood and is a little more "country" the further out you get. It's also near the Natchez Trace Parkway, which is a great drive in the spring or fall. Lieper's Fork might also be a possibility.
If the rustic living/log cabin types of thing is really important to you, you might want to think about increasing your acceptable commute time (say 30 to 40 minutes). That would get you more options. The Radnor Lake area isn't far from Brentwood (and it's a great place to take a stroll), but most of the larger lakes are to the north or northeast. You can always find places for a walk. |

Depending on the specifics of your criteria you should have a number of options. You might want to work with a realtor that is familiar with the area to save you time and help you narrow down the areas that meet your criteria(i.e., price, house amenities, type community, age and condition of home, etc.). If you want to live within twenty minutes or so from Brentwood, Radnor Lake and the Percy and Edwin Warner Parks offer great hiking/backpacking opportunities. I use them for hiking and backpacking about five days a week, and they are very nice with much wildlife. Brentwood itself is one of the most expensive cities in TN, if not the most expensive, when it comes to housing. Part of the reason for this is that you are paying a premium for housing due to the Williamson County School System which is rated high. There are some pockets in Williamson County and parts of south and west Davidson County that have some potential depending on your criteria.
