I emigrated from Los Angeles several years ago and wasted too much time rehearsing my response to church queries and invitations. I didn't get my first one till a few weeks ago. From a former-lesbian-now-female-to-male-transgendered guy. Who would've thought. Apparently official doctrine still forbids homosexuality but the local Seventh Day Adventists haven't yet updated their policy to include the relatively new concept of gender identity so it's pretty much "keep quiet and have a seat." Welcome to the new South. A little better than the old one.

I have lived here for 2 years and only been asked twice about church. One was the Welcome Wagon lady who asked if I had chosen a church yet, and when I said no, she gave me a list of all the churches. No biggie. The 2nd by a Korean friend who thought I might just like to go to a service all in Korean!

I even hang around with some Christian music types and NONE of them have ever asked me about church. Once in a while someone says "Have a blessed day!" and I just say "You, too!"

Come with an open mind and you might like it! (Visit first, though . . .)

One of the things I really like about California is the statewide smoking ban in restaurants and bars; one of the main reason I did not pursue a career as a professional musician is the generally unhealthy working environment. I have enjoyed being able to go to jams here and not come home smelling like a cigarette factory. I've Wiki'ed and it appears that TN has not joined a lot of the rest of the country in being healthy.
I live in the south. My family roots are in many parts of the southeast and I grew up in Nashville. I've NEVER heard of people inviting all new friends to church, much less jettison the friendship when turned down. I find this assertion jawdropping, stated as a generality; and the naivete of many people from other parts of the country as much so, believing something like this.
