Default Car registration

I am going to relocate to Vanderbilt Meds School this summar, my car registration will be expired in Nov. 2012, is it required to register my car in TN or it will be fine to wait until Nov?

You can wait to do it in October before it expires in November. The police will pull you over and ticket you for expired tags.

This link should tell you everything you need to know.

If you have the title bring it with you when you move to Nashville so you have it handy when you need to register in the fall. Tennessee isn't that picky when it comes to vehicle registration, but you will need to get an emissions test and have the title (if there is a lien on the vehicle then there is another procedure to follow - use the link above). Generally you can keep your out of state insurance until the policy expires at which time you should get TN insurance. You will need a TN driver's license to be able to register your vehicle in TN - so also bring your original birth certificate with you this summer.

I just went through this process last year. A few things: 1) You do not need to have a TN driver's license to register a car here. I registered my car here a year before I got a driver's license here. 2) If you are a full-time student, you do not have to get a TN driver's license or vehicle registration. You can keep your out-of-state license and registration. 3) Should you choose to register your vehicle here, it is a relatively painless process, as others have already mentioned. 4) If your tag expires in November, in TN, that means it expires on the last day of the month. You can drive right up through the 30th without having to get a new tag. However, be aware that the last couple of days of the month are the busiest for registering vehicles, and you may have to wait in a long line.

Good luck and welcome!

What county let you register a vehicle without a TN DL? TN can be very picky about having a different address on your DL than your vehicle registration. It is NOT recommended.

Best part is TN allows you to get a driver's license without having to take a test provided you already have an unrestricted license elsewhere.

Good luck with your studies.
