Default Looking for advice.....Tennessee or Kentucky

Good morning everyone,

I'd like to ask for some advice. My wife and I are relocating in the next six months or so because I have accepted a new position. Because of my work I can live any where as long as it is within an hour of an airport. We have been looking at the states of Tennessee and Kentucky. We visited Nashville once for a very short time (2 days) and found it quite enjoyable. We would rather live in a smaller community and have access to a larger city like Nashville or Louisville. We are in our mid forties and would not have children moving with us. We will be buying a home, and I believe the tax rates are comparable in both states. Weather is certainly a factor, considering we are from Wisconsin we would like a warmer climate. We do enjoy socializing and outdoor activites. My wife has a MBA and would like to find a position as well, but is not sure which state would offer the best employment option. Most importantly we are looking for quality of life, New friends, limited crime, and the opportunity to enjoy our new community. I would certainly appreciate all comments and suggestions and feel free to utilize my email address. If additional information is need, do not hesitate to ask. Thank you all for your help.

Sincerely,

Tim

TN has no state income tax. You could live north of Nashville and be close to KY also.

Have you thought about Lexington, KY or Elizabethtown, KY? Elizabethtown is about 30 min south of Lville. Lexington has about 280k people and it's own airport.

There's no question that both Kentucky and Tennessee are nice. However, it's hard to beat Nashville. Nashville has been ranked in many publications as one of the best places in the country for small businesses, business relocation, and quality of life. I honestly don't remember the last time Louisville was mentioned in those kinds of rankings.

In addition, the Nashville airport is much larger than either Louisville's or Lexington's, and since it's a hub for Southwest Airlines and also has JetBlue and Frontier, you can fly just about anywhere in the country for pretty cheap.

Mount Juliet is a beautiful suburb of Nashville that's also not too far from the airport. Hendersonville is just north of Nashville and is right on a lake. Both are nice, booming suburban communities.

The crème de la crème of Nashville suburbs, however, has got to be Franklin. It's got a picturesque, historic downtown area but is also home to some Fortune 500 companies. Nissan USA is building its new corporate HQ in Franklin. Living in Franklin doesn't come cheap, but for those who can afford it, they rave about it.

And as you can imagine, the weather in Nashville is warmer than in Louisville or Lexington. Tennessee's tax structure is also much more business-friendly than Kentucky's (one of the reason Tennessee is growing so much faster than Kentucky).

Smile Northern Kentucky

We lived in Northern Kentucky for 10 years and loved it. We were just outside of Florence, Kentucky in a suburb called Union (lovely area). Florence is just across the Ohio river from Cincinnati. We could go to Bengals games, Reds games, had 1st run Broadway theater, and it was all serviced by the Cincinnati airport (where my husband retired as an air traffic controller). Check out the demographics. It is a lovely area of Kentucky.

For me, this one is too close to call. I love my own state of Tennessee, but Kentucky can be a great place to live as well. Both have their pluses and minuses, and both have some great people and some beautiful areas. If you were asking about eastern Kentucky vs. East Tennessee, I might have another opinion.

Good luck with whatever you decide (and I'm glad it's you having to choose and not me). And remember, whichever one you choose, the other one is just a short drive away.
