I work with two guys who came up after Katrina. According to them, crime isn't nearly as bad here. I don't think I've even met anyone from NO who lives here now who's said crime is as bad here.
However, in general, your odds of being affected by crime depends on a lot of personal choices and factors . . . the exact area you live (almost every city has some high crime zones); whether you hang out in after-hours bars; are involved in the drug scene; have a family that likes to get drunk and get into fights; have a high risk occupation; etc. Before we could make any good recommendation, we'd have to know more about what you're were looking for . . . price range, school priority, commute time, etc. The more specific you can tell us about what's important to you, the more likely it is we can at least point you in the right direction. |

I'm not really into the bar thing any more burned out on that from living in New Orleans for 26 years. I am looking for a good place to have a family and commute to the city would be about 20-30 minutes. Just got married and looking for a nice place to move and get away from the stress of New Orleans but still have that Southern feel.

Nashville might be right for you. Most of the other folks who have came up from NO seem to like it here. The statement I hear most often is "I ain't ever going back."
But . . . I'm not trying to talk you into Nashville. There's a number of other southern cities that might work as well. |

I grew up in Gulfport, MS back when there wasnt anything there. We had to go to either NOLA or Mobile to do anything. I still go to NOLA quite a bit for work. I think I have a good feel for NOLA crime, and I can assure you that crime in Nashville isnt anywhere close to what it is in NOLA. I'm not saying we are crime free up here, its just significantly less crime than down in NOLA.
I moved here seven years ago. My third day in town my car got stolen. I had my car broken into one other time. Outside of that I havent had any brushes with crime and neither have most of my friends. If you run with the right crowd and stay out of places you shouldnt be you should be fine. |
