Never been to Nashville and I don't mean any disrespect, but how racial tolerant would the city be towards my family?
I think that, for the most part, you will find Nashville and the surrounding counties/suburbs to be mostly tolerant and welcoming. We are pretty much a live and let live region here. Racial tension is not a huge issue here as it is in other areas, but I don't think it's fair to classify Nashville as a diverse melting pot mecca either. It's somewhere in between... That said, certainly you might run into people who aren't as open-minded...some areas might be worse than others...

My advice would be to target where you want to live for the school system first and foremost. Most of the area that has great schools (and good school sports programs) also tend to be predominately white and upper middle class. Williamson County and Sumner County/Hendersonville are what I'm thinking of mostly. That does not mean that you won't fit in, just that there are not as many ethnic minorities as you might find in Davidson County/Nashville.

There are some good areas of Davidson County too...but once you get into the high school level of education it can be a very very mixed bag.

Do you have an area of town that you are looking at yet, or are you scouting out the area as a whole still?

thanks you both for commenting.

it is so true about the snowbirds and the young drivers, that made me chuckle.

Still scouting the area, i am filling out applications for employment and i guess it will also be part of the process for me. My wife and i are both looking for jobs, and at least one of us needs to get a good one.

I'll take some heat for this but I think you may actually have some issues with racism here. I grew up here, moved to Los Angeles 19 years ago, came back last year (for family reasons) and will most likely be going back to L.A. (for business reasons). I've not been to Chicago, but compared to L.A., middle TN is pretty racist. The only thing you have going for you (I'm guessing) is you're not Muslim. I have a dear friend here with a bi-racial (white/black) grandchild who is about 10 years old. He has a half brother that is white. He lives with his mom (white) as his dad is deceased. He endures a lot of racist comments - to his face. When camping at a nearby lake, kids at a nearby site said they couldn't play with him because he was a (insert "n" word here). He gets comments at school, etc... It's hard for him. Some folks will tell you that racists are in the minority - and that may be true - but they are a vocal minority. And, seriously, how much of this do you want your kids to have to deal with? Not much, I'm thinking. I tell you all of this as a white woman who was involved in anti-racist work in L.A. so I have a different perspective than some here. And as a white person, I hear racist comments all the time (white folks think I agree because I'm white I guess). It's not 1950 but it's not exactly progressive either.
