Angelrocks is on a distinguished road
Trust me I can't wait to move out of Florida. Actually, Orlando, Daytona or St. Augustine have beautiful homes that are pretty cheap. However, I don't think the music industry is centrally located in Florida. That's why I am moving. I write professionally in the CCM music industry. It was always my dream to do that full time. I want to get involved in every area of CCM music. Nashville is home to this industry, and it's also home to the Country Music industry, as well.

Homes are much cheaper in Nashville than in Southern Florida. I can puchase a home in cash in the Nashville area. I think affordability is a great consideration when purchasing a home. Property taxes have gone through the roof in Florida. I wouldn't suggest Florida even though I love it.

It is a great state, including the fact that it's a debtors state but you may only get so many opportunities in the music industry. If your dream is to be a part of that I would suggest Nashville. If you like warm weather, I would suggest Orlando, St. Augustine or Daytona. I also think West Palm Beach or Boca area is a nicer part of South Florida but my work means more to me than location.

Orlando has a lot going on. If you need to go to college I would suggest Full Sail (Orlando area)! That is the school to go to if your trying to get into the music industry. If you already graduated, then I would consider Nashville.

Perhaps taking a few trips to both Florida and Nashville will help you decide what you want to do. If you focus is on music and your career, and your not going to Full Sail, I would suggest Nashville.

Lightbulb you asked about nashville , here's some advice

[quote=swilson;105523]Hi everyone,
if you are interested in country music , i don't suggest going to nashville . at one time , it was the place to go . now it's not . i suggest branson . it's not as crowded there ( yet ) . and it's afordable to live there . you can get a nice 2 bedroom apartment about 20 minutes outside of branson for $500 . a lot of " old " country is in branson too . nashville has run her self down. too many people trying to make her something she isn't . i use to work as a tour guide for the grand ol' opera . it's ok for tourists , but not to make a career in . now i'm heading to the branson area in september . i can't tell you how many people say i should go there . maybe we'll meet there , if you're heading that way , eh? anyway , if you want to be in country , that's my advice . oh! another place you can try is chicago . after all , chicago use to be a huge comepetor to nashville about 40 years ago . and the surrounding areas , especially near indiana , are still hot for country music !

To Annistaisa- While I respect that this reflects your experience, I can't say that I agree with your opinion, nor have I ever heard anyone else say these things.

If you want to "be" in country music, go to Branson? C'mon, really?

Honestly, I'm sorry you've had a bad experience here, but I don't understand where you get the idea that Nashville's no longer "the place" for country music! I hope you find happiness in Missouri.

One last thing- You say you were "a tour guide for the grand ol' opera." If that is true, then you should know that is actually the Grand Ole Opry.

I agree with akm4, Branson is not the place to go if you want to be discovered in the country music industry. Branson is where has-beens go to spend their golden years. It's a lovely place to visit and see some of the old-timers who are too tired to go on tour anymore.

The music publishers, agents, the two national country music cable channels, and recording studios are in Nashville, not Branson. I don't recall ever hearing a country music star saying they were discovered in Branson.

I've travelled to Nashville on two different occasions to do studio work. I hung with musicians and a few union "execs" who were also musicians. On neither occasion did I see a country musician, hear anything approaching country music (as we know it), not even on the radio stations! I am a piano-man and could've stayed and made my banknote - because there aren't any there. No keyboardists and No drummers - except for the few that are already working. No rehearsal halls available. I enjoyed the music scene that I saw - which was mostly at the clubs by Music Row and out at the "Broken Spoke". While it's true that I didn't meet everybody and didn't hear it all, the general consensus in Nashville just a few short years ago was, if you're a musician and you want to work, go to Branson, So. Carolina or Florida. Well, I felt the same as I've read above - I just wasn't ready to head over to Branson and spend the rest of my years playing with the "Lawrence Welks of Country Music". If I had it to do over, I think I would've gone to Branson. There are some fantastic country vocalists there in Nashville - still swearing they're not country - trying to break in with an "avant-guarde-country-rock-ballad-songwriting" approach .... ummm ... they're all working as machinists or some such and doing Karaoke when they can. Tell Debi Baker-Crider to give me a shout if you get down to Nville.

No keyboardists and no drummers?

I'm not sure what to say. Is this a joke? LOL!

Let me just say that when planning a session (to record demos of new songs), there are plenty of drummers and keyboardists to choose from. Plenty of them play stone country.

No rehearsal halls? I can think of 5 off the top of my head, and I'm a writer, not an artist.

Also- if an artist went around to labels swearing they were not country, I don't think that would go over so well. You're more likely to hear the opposite. Up-and-comer Jesse Lee's myspace headline is "Live and breathe country". That's not unusual. The Country Music Hall of Fame's slogan is "Honor Thy Music". We embrace that. The people I work with are proud of what we do. We write country music. Traditional, bluegrass, Southern rock/country.....whatever flavor it ends up, it's still country.

Let's end on the one thing we agree on- there are some fantastic singers here.

I could use some help in this area as well! As a young 23 year old with very little college I feel my chances are almost at zero! But it's my dream!
