Ok, I'm a Floridian born and raised...but I really want to try a new area. We are a homeschooling family so schools are not an issue. But my husband is trying to get his foot in the door with a business job in sales or real estate...I'm an RN. We want to be close to Nashville, but don't want to break the bank each month for rent (we wil rent until we decide we like TN enough to stay). I have never moved this far (never moved further than 5-10 miles)...can you please pass along ANY advice you would have for a couple and their three children (9 and under). And do you think TN is a good place to live for a young family that homeschools??

That's a valid question, but it's maybe too vague. " . . . (is) TN a good place to live for a young family . . . " Well, yes; it it wasn't you would find so many people who like living here (or generally posting nice things about Tennessee here on this forum).

You might want to really consider what's important to you and then see if Tennessee meets those needs, or if you'd actually be happier staying where you are. There's lots of good things about Tennessee, but that doesn't mean it's always right for every family.

I guess I'm suggesting doing a lot of thinking first (about what's you're looking for, as well as what you're giving up), and then doing the research to see if Tennessee is the best option for you. We can help you with any specific questions you have about Tennessee or Nashville.

When you ask if Nashville is a good place to live for a family that homeschools, I don't know what you mean, exactly.

Could you tell us what makes a city good/bad for a homeschooling family? Then we'll answer those specific questions.

Thanks!

Are you talking about homeschool support groups? I think most of the suburb-type areas of Nashville will have this. Check out Nashville Parent magazine - I think the web address is parentworld.com. They have a list of groups by county (tending to focus more on the southern end, which is unfortunate for me on the north side). I live in White House/Sumner County and know our library has a homeschool story time once or twice a month. There are a number of homeschoolers in the Portland area too. I am sure the same could be said for Hendersonville and Gallatin, as well as Murfreesboro (Rutherford) and Franklin/Spring Hill (Williamson).

As far as real estate jobs - much of the Nashville area is really growing so I don't think that would be too much of a problem. There are also several large hospitals in Nashville - tons of RN jobs listed weekly in the newspaper (Tennessean).
