i live right off of haywood road in that area. it's basically antioch. the area is mixed, a very large percentage of people in this area being mexican, next largest percentage being black, and there's a mixture of others as well, white, chinese, etc.
on haywood lane itself - and within the immediate area, there are many nice and average houses - you might do well to check into rooming an apartment in one of those houses.
as far as apartment complexes go - there's no shortage of them. i used to live in a complex called "hunters pointe" which was about mostly black, then mexican, then white. where i live now (hickory lake apartments) it's almost predominantly mexican, with some black and some white.
you do want to be careful in this area because about every month or every other month, the residents get some sort of notice about this shooting, or this mugging - blah blah - they don't give any details (like for example, if it's a shooting, it might have been by someone who knew the gunman, etc).
knocking on wood, my car has never been stolen, but auto theft is said to be high in this area - so when you park, be sure to lock your doors, keep any valuables out of vision, etc.
to be honest, if you're a single woman (i don't recall) - you're MUCH better off living in an area called Brentioch. It's neither technically Brentwood (which is a more well to do area) nor Antioch - but as the people there don't like to be referred to as Antioch - it's referred to as Brentioch - ha!. It's a very pretty are, the rents are more expensive but it's probably a lot safer as well.
Look at apartments on Edmonson Pike - the more towards Old Hickory Boulevard - the better, the more towards Nolensville, probably not as desireable. That area is really pretty, and there's lots of shopping in that area (on the corner of Old Hickory Boulevard and Edmonson - they have three major grocery chains a "grocery" version of Walmart (not superwalmart), Krogers and Publix - amongst many other shopping in that area and surrounding areas.
It's only a 5-10 minute drive - tops - so if you can afford a bit more in rent and safety is a concern of yours - i'd highly recommend that area.
good luck ....

When I first moved to nashville I started off living in an apartment on Linbar drive. Stay away from that neighborhood! I have lots of bad stories. Then I moved to 37211 (woodbine) and got a place at Whittsett apartments. That was 100% better. The rent was extremely cheap, the neighborhood was pretty safe, and you are within a 10-15 minute drive to just about everywhere in nashville. I wish I had gone directly to Whittsett apartments when I first moved to Nashville.

I just noticed today that there is a Townhouse for Rent in Lenox Village. This is off Nolensville Rd, Between Old Hickory and Holt Road. I get my nails done at the Hair Salon there. It is a complex with homes, shops, restaurants. It's also very safe.

I live in Lenox Village and I would consider it a very safe area and your commute would not be bad at all. Also there are some apartments on Church St. in Brentwood(Colonial Grand at Brentwood)that you might want to take a look at. I would not recommend living near your job. My better half was robbed at gun point on her second night of living in Antioch about 7 years ago off of Bell Rd in her apartment complex. She has never been the same since that happen.
The advantage of renting in Lenox Village is that your more likely to be able to get a short term lease without penalties since individuals own the condos there where an apartment complex usually will charge you a lot more for a short term lease.

Ok...now that you have been scared to even come to Nashville...there have been some excellent suggestions. As a femal Nashville native who has lived all over Nashville...my suggestions are, if you just want to work and no social life, get a place in Lenox Village or close to Edmondson Pk and Old Hickory Blvd., also referred to as Nippers Corner. If $$ is not a huge issue...you can find affordable apartments in the Green Hills area which is close to everything including posh shopping and restaurants, and the travel is very straight down one road to work and you can be there in 15minutes tops. Having lived in both areas...my pick is Green Hills. Look on Craigslist and the zip is 37215. Good Luck.
