My husband, my 3 children (6,3 and 2) and I are planning a move to Nashville or the surrounding area in the next 6 months. I am completely clueless about the area (I have only been 2-3 times on work trips) and I am looking for general advice about school districts and safe/affordable neighborhoods. We currently live outside of Memphis and are both working as EMTs. We are both planning on attending the community college. I would like our home, school and work to be relatively close to each other. If you could offer some advice on neighborhoods to look in for rentals, good schools, etc, it would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Which community school? Nashville State Community College? If so, you would probably want to start looking in what the real estate people refer to as Area 2 (on the west side of Nashville) and spread your search out from there (including in to surrounding counties).

Yes! Thanks! I didn't think about whether or not there would be more than one CC. Lol.

As far as my budget, we really don't want to spend more than $1200 a month, and lower would be nice.

How safe is the area around the school? I think my job is on the southeast side of the city... I've been reading over maps all evening so it looks like having work and school conveniently placed isn't going to happen

If you were going to school at NSCC and working on the southeast side of town, the Sylvan Park area (near West End and I-440) would be almost perfect (you could take I-440 to the southeast). I'm not sure about rental rates there however. The area has become extremely popular and the house prices have soared.

If your kids were older, and you planning on buying a house rather than renting, we would probably have to spend more time discussing Nashville public schools. At the elementary level it's not quite the same concern (although it can still be an issue).

We don't plan on buying for at least 2 more years until we are finished school. EMTs don't make quite as much as we'd like so we are both working on our nursing pre req's right now. I had heard Nashville schools are significantly better than Memphis schools but I have only just started researching that

You asked about the safety of the area around NSCC. It's fine there for the most part; slightly less so over towards Charlotte Pike.

There is an older subdivision right across the road from the school. Smallish brick houses built back in the 1940s and 50s. Many have been renovated. The rental rates are probably high there for what they are, but you might be able to find something there in your budget. I just don't keep up with rates so I can only guess.

It's not a long drive from there to I-440 (if you know the shortcuts through the back way).
