This has been announced a few times before -- but they were able to institute number conservation measures to delay it. I don't think that can happen for much longer.

Quote:
The TRA is considering two options. The first would be to split the region in two and assign half of all wireless and landline customers a new area code. The second would be to assign all new subscribers to a new area code.

Information on the split can be found on the TRA’s website, Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA), as well as a consumer survey. Information and print copies of the survey also can be obtained by calling 615-741-2904, ext. 174.

I think the so-called overlay area codes are preferable, although everyone would have to get used to dialing 10-digit numbers even for local calls. That's pretty much how it is anyway, though, given the prevalence of cell phones and how most people don't bother changing numbers anymore when they move.

I agree. A split disrupts more people, and it opens the possibility for future problems if one of the split areas experiences disproportionate growth from the other (though that would probably not be for quite a while.

And yes, with the prevalence of cell phones these days, 10 digit dialing is not a particularly big deal. Even now, most companies advertise their phone numbers with all 10 digits. That wasn't so widespread when I was growing up.

Ten digit dialing (overlay) was introduced in Houston 20 years ago. I hated the idea at first, but got to where I didn't think about it after a few weeks. Some people move into your area from across country and don't get a new phone number so they're already doing it and same for people calling them.

Ive had a 423 area code on my cell while living in northeastern TN, NYC, and now Knoxville (which is 865 for those who are unaware). It's been with me all over, I couldnt give it up now.

I remember when the 615 area code covered all of Middle and East Tennessee. When East Tennessee got its own area code (423) that was a pretty big deal, and then of course each of Tennessee's grand divisions got additional area codes. I still grin at Knoxville's area code (865-VOL).

If you had to pick Nashville's new area code so that it spells something, what would you pick?

How about 840?

The 615 area code will probably be out of numbers by late 2014 or early 2015.

I remember when we had 615 area codes in Northeast TN when I was young. Guess the state has grown a LOT since then!

The new code should probably spell CMT. <g>

The 901 area code was Tennessee's first area code. They didn't add the 615 area code until about 60 years ago.

The 423 area code in eastern Tennessee is supposed to have another area code within 5-7 years. I kind of doubt that they would overlay 423 area code with the new area code.
