Being a member here for nearly 4 years, I think this is actually my first post. Hopefully someone will be able to assist.

My 50 year old brother in law has lived with my father in law his entire life up until now. My father in law's health has failed and he is now confined to a nursing home for the rest of his life. That leaves my wife and myself with the issue of where to place my brother in law. He is capable of taking care of himself about 75% of the time but cannot live alone. We have been shuffling him back and forth to our house and my father in law's house for the past 2 months and this is starting to wear greatly on us as a family.

We have looked into many programs only to find out that there is a waiting list a mile long or they are not taking new members.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much.

Have you called The ARC or TABS to ask for advice? You probably have, and I apologize if I'm giving you info you already have.

Tennessee Adult Brothers and Sisters (TABS)

There are lists of places to call for more info here:

Still pondering this.

Tennessee Disability Pathfinder | Searchable Database

and I assumed you'd contacted DSAMT, but in case you have not yet
Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee

Someone at Brightstone might have ideas for you

And you may consider an in-home caregiver, in home supports, instead of a place for him to live (if there are no places for him to live).

As previously suggested check with the Kennedy Center - though the website indicates Vanderbilt, it's located on the Peabody College campus. While much of their work is with children, they should have very good connections that might prove helpful. Good luck to you and your brother.
