Ahh...I gotcha.
You know, I'm not sure...I usually drench mine with (more) sauce anyway, so I guess I never paid too much attention...but I do believe they usually come with sauce in Memphis.

In most of Middle Tennessee, traditionally, pulled pork barbeque comes plain . . . with a variety of sauces that you can add yourself (everything from Louisiana Hot Sauce to their "secret recipe" sauce). They don't drench the barbeque in sauce before you get it . . . which is what Neeley's does.

I don't like it with sauce on it either. I like to put my own on. I got some takeout from Martin's after spending the day in Murfreesboro looking at off Campus apartments for my daughter in the fall. I went to 8 complexes .
Martin's now has 3 sauces, and you can put your own on.

Yeah, to me it's like getting a steak that someone has already poured half a bottle of A-1 Steak Sauce on.
Different places each has their own style of barbeque . . . and each think theirs is the best (same with chili). I just don't like "Memphis style" barbeque at all, and neither do most of the people I know. There is a limited number of places to go for lunch over at MetroCenter and I still can't get anyone to go with me to Neeley's even on those rare occasions when I feel like going. Well, except for "Daughter #1" when I offer to buy lunch (she will go with me ANYWHERE when I offer to pay).
I keep hearing so much about Martin's that I wish it was a little closer. A drive to Nolensville for barbeque is a bit far to go.

Where is neely's, alleycat? I work in MetroCenter and would love some Memphis BBQ every now and then.
As for not liking Memphis BBQ, to each his own. I like it the best, but I was raised on it as well...so I can understand that some people don't like it.
One thing I don't like about MemBBQ is the sauce factor. I love being able to choose from a selection of sauces. Sometimes I may want one kind, next time another. I personally like sauce that is sweet at first, then spicy at the end. Willingham's makes some damn fine sauce.
Famous Dave's is pretty good in that regard (choice of sauces)...

It's right beside Watkins (where the theatres used to be); or between Watkins and Fountain Square. There's also a pizza place there that isn't too bad. We have to make do with whatever we can for lunch over here.
Do you ever go to Swett's in the Farmers Market?

I do go to the Farmer's market, but Swett's doesn't sound familiar.
I usually go with the NewOrleans place and the Greek place. Keep meaning to try the jamaican place (I love jerk ckn). The Oriental isn't so good, and I have a hard time paying $5/lb for a salad with store-bought dressings, so I haven't tried it.
We do need to be resourceful when eating out around here. Thanks for the tip on neely's and pizza.

Swett's is good for a "meat and two" lunch.
The pizza place has a $6.50 buffet. It's not the greatest pizza in the world but it's okay for lunch, plus there's some other things like spaghetti and salad.
If you ever see a big, tall guy in there with a young woman who can't decide what she wants, that'll be me. Oh, and I'll be the one buying.

I'll keep an eye out for ya.
Yeah, my wife mentioned a "meat & three" place around here somewhere, but I didn't realize it was at the market.

They have two locations. I think the main one is on Jefferson Street somewhere.
I need to go try the Germantown Cafe. I didn't even know it existed until a couple of weeks ago. It look good from their website (but then, what doesn't?).

I've eaten there twice...meh.
It's okay, but compared to everything else around here, it's gourmet food.
