I hope I am not limited to Cable. Cause I really want to keep Direct TV.
Has anyone had any experience with a Air Card from Verizon in the area?

I use a Verizon Air Card on my laptop and it works great. The speed is not quite as fast as our AT&T DSL, but it is still very fast. The card works all over the Middle Tennessee Area.
The Verizon card even works in the car traveling down the interstate. (My wife, of course, is driving at the time I am surfing the web.) I even saw our car on one of Kansas City's Interstate Traffic Cameras which is strange since we were in Nashville at the time. (Just kidding)
I have taken my laptop on vacation out west and the card worked at our campgrounds in the middle of Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. And, this year, on our camping trip to Maine, it worked in Acadia National Park. Yes, we really rough it when we camp. We have our tent, cook out over the campfire and, of course, have our internet!
The better the signal from Verizon, the faster your air card will be.
I lost DSL for two weeks during the BellSouth/AT&T merger, but was able to stay on the internet thanks to Verizon. I pay $49 a month, and that is for unlimited access.
As far as DSL, you may try Earthlink. My church in Nashville has Earthlink and it seems to work well for them. It could possibly be your home in Portland may be so far from the telephone switching office, DSL may not be an option. I hope that is not the case.
We love DirecTV. I am not sure how it gets the signal as the dish on our roof is pointed directly into a tree which has grown in front of it. I may have to think about relocating the dish before the tree comes back to life in the spring.
Good luck!
