Default Portland Internet?

I own a house in the Northview Estates in northern Portland just off 109 (about 3 miles from the Kentucky border) I live in California right now and plan on moving in April. I am looking for a internet provider.

Does anyone know what is available in that area?

You might want to try Comcast. I think they cover that area.

I live in Cross Plains about 15 miles from Portland and my internet provider is AOL and I pay 9.95 just for the basic. I have Directv total choice plus which is 51.99, an additional receiver for 4.95 and the protection plan for 5.99 a month for a total of 68.26. Although comcast is on my road it stops at the city limits and I live about 1/4 mile outside the city limits.

You could probably get either AT&T or Earthlink DSL there. I'm not sure since I don't live in Portland.

I would love to get AT&T DSL thats what I have right now and stay with Direct TV. To me that would be ideal. But if I have to I may go with a Air Card from Verizon. I am NOT going to pay those prices from Cable. That is insane....

I hope I am not to far out to get DSL form AT&T.. Not sure how Earthlink works

Default AT&T DSL Service

I have AT&T DSL in Nashville and love it. Recently, AT&T merged with BellSouth and I was able to "bundle" my DSL Service with local and long distance telephone service and DirecTV, as well, saving me some money. You can also bundle your cell phone service. I did not opt for that, as I have Verizon and am very happy with it. If you know the zip code where you will be living, you can go to this webpage http://localization.att.com/loc/cont...ernet_services
enter your zip code and it should be able to tell you if you have AT&T DSL Service available. I would think you would, since BellSouth, which covers this area, is now AT&T.

I wish you luck! Happy Holidays!
Buzz

Thanks for the suggestion BuzzCam... I called AT&T this morning and they said they do not offer DSL to the street my house is on... Darn it...

I hope I am not limited to Cable. Cause I really want to keep Direct TV.

Has anyone had any experience with a Air Card from Verizon in the area?

I use a Verizon Air Card on my laptop and it works great. The speed is not quite as fast as our AT&T DSL, but it is still very fast. The card works all over the Middle Tennessee Area.

The Verizon card even works in the car traveling down the interstate. (My wife, of course, is driving at the time I am surfing the web.) I even saw our car on one of Kansas City's Interstate Traffic Cameras which is strange since we were in Nashville at the time. (Just kidding)

I have taken my laptop on vacation out west and the card worked at our campgrounds in the middle of Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. And, this year, on our camping trip to Maine, it worked in Acadia National Park. Yes, we really rough it when we camp. We have our tent, cook out over the campfire and, of course, have our internet!

The better the signal from Verizon, the faster your air card will be.

I lost DSL for two weeks during the BellSouth/AT&T merger, but was able to stay on the internet thanks to Verizon. I pay $49 a month, and that is for unlimited access.

As far as DSL, you may try Earthlink. My church in Nashville has Earthlink and it seems to work well for them. It could possibly be your home in Portland may be so far from the telephone switching office, DSL may not be an option. I hope that is not the case.

We love DirecTV. I am not sure how it gets the signal as the dish on our roof is pointed directly into a tree which has grown in front of it. I may have to think about relocating the dish before the tree comes back to life in the spring.

Good luck!

We have a Motor Home and will be doing some traveling also and the Air Card kinda sounds like the way we may go. I have a Verizon cell phone that I can surf with but it is very limited and slow. I can't up grade my cell phone because if I do that I will lose the internet feature. (They no longer offer the service now that they have the Air Card)

I was talking to my son last night (he is in Oklahoma) and he was telling me that he has Cable internet but not cable T.V. Now that would be awesome because I could keep Direct T.V. and have HIGH speed internet...

I am thinking I may be to far out to get a good DSL signal of any kind...

Thanks Buzz for sharing your use of the Air Card... I am really leaning that way now... I also heard that you can buy a router for the Air Card and that way you can use more then one computer at a time......
