The last two posts hit the nail on the head. I'm a (fairly) young black blue collar worker and there's definitely plenty of urban black professionals here. I've been down here for 2+ years, and coming from Milwaukee, like nashvols said, it's comparable to that size metro in black population. That being said, yes Atlanta will give you many more options, but from what I've observed here so far, the BUP ranks are growing. I'll say this, with this many HBCUs and many universities, as mentioned above, you're going to find many more BUP than other sized metros JUST because that, especially compared to cities in the Midwest.

Nashville runs at it's own speed, and that's good.

Atlanta is just the "it" city when it comes to professional Afican Americans, has been since it's boom in the 1970's... Many come and go all the time. Many in Atlanta are not from Atlanta, they go there because of the opportunities for African Americans to achieve a little faster than other cities. Atlanta is the epic center for black culture, many black shows, social events, religious events, HBCU sporting events, etc. are held there and African Anericans from all over flock to the city for the various occasions and return to their own cities afterwards... I say all of this to say Atlanta is a beast of it's own and can not be compared to other cities, just like New York can't be compared to other cities when talking about general population, lifestyles, etc.
Nashville, where I was born and raised, African American, can hold it's own with young professional African Americans and professional Aftican Americans in general. As it was stated before Nashville is home to 4 HBCU's, including American Baptist College, and not only that several of us, including myself attended Middle Tennessee State University that has a sizable African American population current and alumni, in nearby Murfreesboro and still reside in Nashville and surrounding areas, same for Vanderbilt and the other universities in the area.
Nashville is also home to the largest African American church in the state, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, as well as several other progressive African American churches in the city similar to Mt.Zion... I could go on and on, but I will say, unfortuntently, or not, the black and white culture in Nashville are completely differnt, like night and day, so of coarse information provided by a non-African American on here may not be quite correct.

I've also noticed a "larger than most think" professional class in Nashville. A lot of what has been said is true due to the hbcu presence.

I don't think Nashville is comparable to Atlanta and Dallas as far as being a popular place for African Americans but may be a good choice for you.

I agree with Nashvols. I am not African American, but there is a very large population of educated black professionals not only in my circle of neighbors and friends, but in the Nashville area. We have Historical Black Colleges like Fisk, and Tennessee State University with combined enrollments of over 7000 students many of which stay in Nashville.

There is but I believe its smaller then other similar sized cities or metros like Charlotte.....and in the South no one is seeing Atlanta in that regard.
