CRobin4564 is on a distinguished road
Default Relocating to Middle Tn./Shelbyville

Hello:
My husband and son and I are seriously considering moving to Shelbyville TN. We are familiar with the area as my family moved from there in the 1940's and we have visited on and off in the past few years. My husband and I are 58 and our son is 14 and will be starting high school in 2008. We have just a couple of cousins left in Tn. so we will be on our own for the most part.

We are excited about relocating...all the new places and people. But I am the "worrier" of the group. I have asthma and wonder if my asthma will be worse. I'm worried about adjusting to the high humidity. I worry about spiders and snakes...well, not too much about them as we have bad ones here in CA. .

If worst came to worse we could always move back to Central CA. but it would be a big deal. So do you think I am worrying needlessly? I know the people are great, etc. I guess I'm just anxious about moving to a new state at this point in our lives.

Any advise? Anyone have anything to say about Shelbyville?

Thanks so much,

Carol

From what I know, Shelbyville is a nice, small town.

I don't know whether your asthma would be worse here or not; if high humidity makes it worse, then it probably would be worse here for a couple of months during the year. Remember though that air-conditioning is everywhere now . . . home, car, and office. There can be some miserable days during July and August if it's exceptionally hot and humid, but you don't have to be out in it all the time. And I think our springs and autumns are great here.

As for spiders and snakes, yes, we have them (and a few irritating little bugs) but you probably are worrying about nothing. I live near a river and I've occasionally seen a snake in my walks along the river, but other than that I don't remember seeing a snake around the house in the past twenty years. Snakes seems to be a major concern of people thinking of moving here, which always seems strange to those of us who do live here. I'm surprised you didn't ask about tornadoes too; another major concern of out-of-staters.

I've not trying to talk you into moving. That's a major decision that only you can make. There are good things and bad things about anyplace, including Tennessee. For me, I don't really want to live anywhere else, but then I'm an old Tennessee boy; the rolling hills, hardwood forests, mountains, rivers and lakes, and change of seasons is in my blood.

Just do your research, come for a visit or two, and decide if it's right for you. Good luck.
