Looks like I'm going to need a root canal soon. I don't handle dental work well at all and I'm dreading my first root canal. Can anyone recommend a really good practice? I've heard of a lot of bad ones, but not good ones. I live in Franklin but would be willing to travel for the right person.

My family goes to Dr. Nally at Nally and Horne in 100 Oaks. I really like him. I've never had a root canal, but he does all the dental work for all of our family and we've had nothing but good experiences. You could search the board for his name, I know some other people on the board have mentioned going to him also.

I've been going to Dr. Nally for 23 years now. I've never had a root canal. One thing I'll say is that if you don't NEED some type of dental work, then he won't try to push it on you (i.e. if there are safe alternatives, or if the work is plain unnecessary).

I think root canals get a bad rap. I have had a couple of them. I have ALSO lost a tooth (it cracked down to the root) and I'd take a root canal over a lost tooth any day.

Really.

They are very good at numbing up the area. I brought my iPod to listen to music. Took around 45 minutes (after the drugs kicked in) and did not hurt as it was being done. Hardest part is probably having your mouth open so long. Afterwards he gave me some pain meds, that I did not end up using. But you probably should.

I WANTED to eat mashed potatoes (my go to comfort food) but it was suggested not to eat hot food, so yogurt, cottage cheese . . . I even had mashed potatoes but just slightly warmed up (yes, I cheated).

When you lose a tooth, you have a hole there for about 6 weeks until it heals, then you have to get an implant and then a crown. It can run $4,000 - $5,000 and take a couple months.

So, really, you're saving the life of a tooth. This is a good thing. Amazing that they can do this. You need to save your tooth.

I'll see if I can find the name of the guy I used. Very gentle. Kind office staff. No fancy flat screens and designer coffee.

PS. My regular dentist sent me to this guy, who only does root canals . . so he specializes in them (endodontics). His name is Dr. Robert Borders and he's at 2300 21st Ave South, so from Franklin I just drove straight up Hillsboro. DM me if you want his number.

He was the dr who discovered my tooth was cracked AFTER one of my root canals. He only charged me a fraction of his fee even though he had done the work. (It was a small hairline fracture that he found with a "blue light"?) I really respected him for that.

I had the best experience with Dr. Christopher Cain at Endodontic Associates in Cool Springs. They were extremely nice and understanding that dental procedures can be very scary. Good luck to you! I hope you find someone who makes you feel at ease.

Thanks everyone! I do go to Nally and Horne (thanks to all the reviews on here) but I dont think they do root canals, and I would prefer a specialist.

You don't need a specialist.

Nally did my root canal... through an existing crown, too. Absolutely easy deal. No pain. Very easy deal. Dr. Nally has a way of putting people at ease.

Been going there 30 years. He never pushes unnecessary work. I have a tooth with a big filling and part of the tooth's side missing since 1995. I also have a molar with a hairline crack since forever. Dr Nally says, "We're watching that. When it breaks, we'll crown it." On the other hand, I've had him fix bad work done by another dentist while I was temporarily living out of town.

Dr Horn will probably take over the practice at some point. Since Dr Nally chose Horn as a partner, I am completely confident in his ability, also.

Nally and Horn are EXCELLENT.
