Greetings folks,

My wife and I are considering moving to the area and have some questions:
  • What school district pays the highest wages to teachers in the area?
  • Do any school districts pay stipends to teachers who are national board certified? If so, how much?
  • Do any school districts have an Adapted PE program?

Any other general wisdom would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Hi,
Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools pays the most in the area, as far as I know. Starting pay for beginning teachers is $40,000. It is not the easiest district in which to work though. We will be getting a new director next year, so who knows what it'll be like?
National Board Certification gains you $4,000 more per year.
I'm sorry, but I don't know much about Adapted PE programs.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the help!

Do you know if my wife would have a tougher time finding a job since she's not fresh out of college? She has her Masters and would be coming in as step 9.

I know, in my particular school at least, having experience helps! What grade level/subject is she teaching?

She teaches Adapted PE for elementary school kids currently but I don't think they offer that down that way (they don't seem to in many areas at all) so she is taking the general Special Ed Praxis in December so she can teach that instead.

Her National Board Certification is in Adapted PE but with as few teachers have that certification we're hoping it will help even if in a different subject area than general Special Ed.

Any advice for getting through the application process? I know teaching jobs have a lot of demand.

I really appreciate your help (and I know she does as well!).

To begin, go to the mnps.org website and look under the careers tab. They have an online application process. Does your wife have a Tennessee teaching license? Once all those mandatory things are completed, making contact with the principals of the schools she's interested in is a good thing to do. They get so many emails per day, I would consider sending a real letter and a resume to those individuals.

No, does she need one to get a job? I'll have to talk to her about that. I was under the impression there was some sort of mutual agreement between states that you can find a job if licensed in another state and have a year to get that state's licensing or something along those lines.

Thanks again for your help, I'll be looking into the licensing now.

I think she would have a better chance if she went ahead and did whatever is necessary to receive the TN license. I'm not sure though. It's likely just a matter of filling out the paperwork, which is a headache!
You're welcome! Where are you living now?
