Schools are very popular in this area too.
Are you looking to buy or rent?

Hendersonville is too big. We want smaller.
We originally lived in the country in Idaho.... very beautiful, but, the area is growing too fast, and too many people.
In 10 years the city moved out to the country swallowing up all the farmland.
We want to be within an hour of Nashville, if we want to visit... but, far enough that we won't be touched by the suburban sprawl.
We plan to buy.
I also want to be close enough to my Dad, he just bought a house in White House, in Robertson County.

I moved to Hendersonville from Denver, 17 years ago. I had to chuckle when you said Hend was too big. The population is about 53,000 or so. White House has a smaller population, but it's growing. Springfield is closer to White House. An hour outside of Nashville might put you in Portland, Westmoreland or Bethpage. Maybe do a search on Sumner County. Robertson County is adjacent to Sumner. There are lovely rural communities in Trousdale County. So many of the counties surrounding Nashville are being built up.When I moved to Hend, there were miles of farms with cows and horses. Now those are filled up with O'Charley's and Home Depot...to name a couple.

My neice lives in Portland.
My Dad is in White House on the Robertson side.
We haven't made up our minds yet which county we want to live in.
We really won't know until we drive down there, in April, checking the areas out.
We want that small town community.
Our plan is to buy a few acres, with an existing home, or possibly build.
We still haven't decided yet.
It really depends on what is available when we do move down.

I would never want the commute from Hendersonville. It is brutal as the traffic is always messed up.
I think people are steering you right when they say Mt. Juliet or Lebanon, although Lebanon is a hike. Both are really nice places full of growth, and affordable housing with decent schools and are diverse populations.
Williamson County is an idea but there is a PERCEIVED racism there. I don't think it is real but I'm not black either so how would I know? Spring Hill is a fast growing area with some more affordable homes and is pretty diverse in population. Property values are creeping up there so now is the time if you want to go there. The area is exploding!
Antioch is too spotty for me to recommend to anyone. Some areas are nice and some areas are just not that great. I tend to look at where I will shop, eat, etc., and Antioch is just too sketchy for me. All in all, I'd say go to another place for the peace and security you are seeking.
Check out reatracs.com too because it lists lost of houses/pics/stats.
Good luck!

@gt - you're right about Hendersonville. It's best enjoyed if you work and play there. I lived there for 17 years and moved into Nashville just a couple of months ago. I love the convenience of living in town. I can get to wherever I need to be in less than 15 minutes. I snicker at the 'creeping' traffic when I watch the morning traffic report.
Lebanon is nice, but again, it's so far. If one is content with working and playing there, then it's a good deal. I just really get bummed out with the one way in, one way out thing.
The Nashville area has grown so much, and property values have not suffered like in some parts of the country. "They" are predicting that we will continue to have good real estate sales in 2007 with prices going up, so anyone wanting in might want to make that move soon.

My husband and I are looking to move to the Nashville area. We have a 6 year old and we are very active. What towns would you recommend? We have been focusing on Murfreesboro, but have not made a definite decision yet. We want top rated schools, but affordable housing. And by affordable I mean nice/decent homes that are in the $80,000 - $130,000 range. Also, what are the insurance rates there? I am in Florida and the homeowners insurance here is outrageous. I am talking in the upwards of $4000/year for an average home. Thanks for the info.
