Default Nashville trip-a tale of two cities?

Toured some of Nashville and surrounding areas this past week for possible relocation and now am more confused than before the visit. Kind of made a circle around the city, stopped at various towns, talking to some of the locals. Started in Franklin and went clockwise to Murfreesboro. Had expected to find a less frantic breed of city mouse here, but it seemed to be the same as other cities of it's size. For example, shoppers and drivers were less than courteous. I felt like I was the only person using a turn signal or politely allowing those exiting a building to go first or holding doors open for the person following us in a building. No worse than any other place, but just not as laid back as we had expected. Granted, this is a small glimpse in a small amount of time and we realize that it's not fair to lump everything in this one quick trip.

However....the farther out we went, the more laid back and polite things became. But the down side of that was the long commute to the city for work and play and the lack of work and play in these smaller communities. And the cost of housing is not dramatically less than in Nashville, either. We are middle income empty nesters and are targeting the below 200K markets. We are not fancy folks, do not need a new house or car, but we do want a decent place to live. Am RN with 10 years before retirement, so need to be within reasonable commute to a hospital.

Have been reading and paying attention to the postings here, and had really hoped that Nashville would fit our needs, but not as sure now. We will come back in a few months and check out some more areas. It is a very pretty area of TN, and we would like to see more. There appear to be some very nice communities in several of the surrounding towns, but we fear that they are above our budget. Please, no offense meant by any of my thoughts posted here, we might be looking for something that doesn't exist anymore anywhere. The problem may lie with us and not the city of Nashville. It's probably hard to find anyplace in our price range in any city. We will look some more in the Nashville area in the near future. Thanks for allowing me to share my thoughts.

Really good post and I can agree with much of it.

Middle TN is an okay place to me, but nothing special at all. I think many of the areas are overpriced as well and completely agree with finding affordable housing near work. However, I think it's like that most places.

Maybe look into somewhere east in the state?

Drivers aside, nashville really is a wonderful place to live. Not sure that you got the best idea from the places you visited (short of Franklin which is wonderful) There are some really great neighborhoods for you to look at that are made even better since you do not have the concern of schools. There are hospitals everywhere you go here so it should be fairly easy to find employment. You can find your price range within short distance of downtown or possibly a community east or north of the city would meet your needs. Give us another chance, you won't be dissapointed.

Thank you both, have looked into east TN already. HW-thanks, briefly drove through those areas, did not stop anywhere in that neck of the woods for very long to make a judgement of any value to us. Did not like Murfreesboro at all, but interestingly, the college students there were some of the nicest, friendliest, and open folks we talked to during this past visit. Moreso than the "older" folks who always seemed rushed and/or mistrustful of us. We will be back, though, we did not spend enough time to make a solid case either way for the area.

Try Smyrna, TN. It is halfway between Nashville and Murfreesboro. It is located off of Interstate 24. There is a large hospital at Sam Ridley Parkway.
There is tons of Afordable housing in your price range and many hospitals near by.
I moved to Nashville a year and a half ago and really love it here.

RE/MAX Elite has TN homes listed online
