Murfreesboro- Right place for us?
Hello everyone,
I was hoping you guys could give me some advice. My wife and I are currently looking to move out of South Florida because, as another poster aptly put it, we are trying to get away from plastic people chasing money. South Florida seems to have lost all morals and ethics and we don't want to raise our two children in that kind of environment. We are looking for a home in the 200-300k range with a good school system. My wife is a teacher and I am a firefighter/paramedic. Not knowing the area, one big concern I have is racism. Although my wife is white, I'm afraid of my kids being subjected to discrimination because of hispanic last names. I know this exists everywhere, but Im trying to find the right place to raise my girls. Thanks for any help you could provide.

i always think when people think of tennessee, they think of racism.
i live in lebanon, about 30 miles away, but my dad lives in smyrna which is very close to murfreesboro. its a pretty large town, near 100k and rapidly growing, but im sur eyou know that. living in this region my whole life, i never really see any kind of discrimination happening. its home of the largest undergraduate college in the state, middle tennessee state university (which ill prob be transferring to next spring actually), and ive never really heard of much crime happening there, in 2006 it was rated the 84th best place to live of 745 cities of over 50,000, and they recently got public transportations. theres arts, museums, and shopping too.
i kinda took half of that off wikipedia and half from my own experience, since i dont really go to murfreesboro often, but when ive been there, theres about anything youd want there. its pretty spread out though.
i dont know what youre looking for, but im pretty sure racism isnt a problem there, as well as most places in the state, despite stereotypes.
oh and, snow does happen here. its rare, but most of the time its flurries and doesnt accumulate, but hey, at least your kids will see snow. ive seen nashville averages of around 9 inches a year, but that seems high.
summers will be similar to what you experience in south florida, but just a bit less humid. winters will be a change for you...i heard south florida stays at the 70s even during the winter? itll stay down around the 40s-50s for highs, sometimes dipping down below freezing
theres also a topic down below that could explain it better then i could

Hi Gappler,
I live in Murfreesboro and I moved from South Florida. I agree with what you said about Florida totally! I am so glad to be out of that state. I think Murfreesboro would a great place for you and your family. I am very happy here. It is culturally diverse so you and your family would be fine. You won't find it a difficult transition at all. Murfreesboro is a very conveinient city too. All you would need is here and you won't have to go far for anything. I don't have kids in school, but from what I have heard the schools here are very good. The neighborhoods are very nice and well kept. They have a very safe feel to them.
If you move here, I am sure you would be very much welcomed with open arms. No need to worry.

Thanks guys. It sounds great. I appreciate the feedback. I hope I didn't offend anyone from Tenn with my question. I had a bad experience in S. Fla and I'm trying to avoid my children going through the same. Of course racism is everywhere, but I'm trying to play the odds. Thanks again.

Out of curiosity, what made you choose Murfreesboro?

Grappler, for your price range, I would searching on 'Triple Siegel' for homes: Siegel Elementary, MS, HS. That seems to be the best set of schools in the area and you should be able to find a nice house.

My wife is Latina and teaches in Rutherford County. I doubt your kids will experience any overt racism, with the exception that a lot of people here assume that all Latin Americans are Mexican. Your kids, and mabye you, might have to explain that quite a few times.
With the exception of a few schools, most are generally happy with Rutherford County and Murfreesboro City Schools.
You'll get a ton of house for your that amount as well.
Just curious on your name, do you train BJJ or MMA?

Thank you all for all the info. Murfreesboro just happened to be one of the areas I came across during my research. No particular reason for choosing it. Mike in TN, yes I train in BJJ and MMA at American Top Team in fort lauderdale. I noticed there is a school called Guardian MMA that looks pretty good in Murfreesboro. Would you happen to be a member?

My sister is Hispanic and lives in Murfreesboro (we are from Miami). She has had no problems and many of her friends are also hispanic. I have visited her many times and I have never felt uncomfortable in my many many visits to the area.
The area is very nice and convienent to lots of shopping. The Siegal schools, I believe, are the best schools in the area. Blackman schools are also supposed to be good...the only thing that concerns me is the new Bible Park they want to build....keep that in mind when you buy.
Good Luck

ATT is an absolutely phenomenal team. That's great you train there!
There is a school called Guardian here, but I can't really tell you much about it. It's certainly not like ATT. It's just off the public square downtown in a really big commercial trailer (I guess that's what it is). It's a decent size from what I hear. There are a couple of gyms here that also offer classes, but I've got a strong inclination that those are cookie-cutter type classes.
I've followed MMA for a long time, but I never really got into training. My slow reflexes keep me as a spectator.
