How does the traffic compare to the Phoenix metropolitan area? Does anyone have that experience? The freeway system here seems to have been designed by someone who doesn't have to drive on them.

When considering size, Austin may have the worst traffic of any city in the U.S. It is essentially Nashville's size (only slightly larger) and has traffic congestion scores that are equal to NYC and LA.

Austin
San Antonio
Houston
Dallas
Atlanta

Just to name a few that I have personal experience with. Compared to these cities, Nashville is a cake walk.

All the cities where I have experienced ridiculous traffic also offer regular running easily accessible subway, rail or bus options.

In Boston last year I opted for a hotel outside the busy city area because I didn't like the traffic and found the T to be soooo easy. Even taking the T to the beach was fine.

Last few visits to B'more the same.

Always rent a car for LAX cause I am usually all over the area and rather just drive then try to figure out the multiple city bus systems.

Train always in NY, driving is horrid and Holland tunnel tolls are like paying for parking and well traffic makes you feel parked anyway. GPS is good for navigating around though and train is not the most economical option (for 2 or more) when going by car to Conneticut or Boston.

ATLANTA...traffic nightmare but I seldom do much in the metro area when there so I just try and bypass that 10-12 lane craziness during rush hour.

Chicago car worked fine last time, parking ridiculous but the walk was nice and needed.
