Default Miami to Tennessee

Just wondering if any of you are originally from South Florida who have moved to the Nasville area? Are you happy about the move? Pros and cons, please.

Hi Katcha,

My Husband and I moved from West Palm Beach to Murfreesboro last August. So far we are very happy here. We bought a very nice 2000 square foot house in a really nice neighborhood for less than we sold our townhouse for in South Florida. I would say that was a pro. The neighborhood I moved from was turning bad. It was very depressing to be there anymore. Financially were not hurting as we lived in our house quite awhile and were not really affected by the insurance and tax nightmare at all, my point being it was not a forced move. It was about choice. I was tired of what Florida was becoming. I dont really have any major cons to speak of since we've been here. People are great. The town is clean. "They sweep the streets" imagine that! Haven't seen street sweepers since NY. People here really take care of their neighboorhoods and homes. Haven't really seen an unkept one yet.
So big pro there. 4 distinct seasons. Pro! Reasonably cost of living. Money goes further here, pro! Car insurance is way less, pro! Electric is way less, pro! Gas is less, pro! Cable, phone internet. The same. Groceries are the same as well. The only con I have found in my area is that there is more traffic than I anticipated but nothing like Florida. Not even close. Most drivers here are very well mannered. I hardly ever hear horns on the road, like Florida. The street design here is a little confusing to me too. Can't have everything though. As far as jobs go, I would say there is a pretty good job market in Murfreesboro atleast. Hubby and I make the same as Florida. pro! The only advice I would offer is depending on what one does for a living, please pick an area where you can work or commute to work. Some people have been unhappy due to employment. Either they picked an area too remote( no job market) or they did not research if there job skill translated to TN. Our transition here was easy. Over all I don't have any real cons. We are happy. The environment here is so much less stressful than Florida. It's a great state to live in.

Thank you for your nice comments, Kim, but you're being way too kind to us on this one. ;-) As much as I love my city and my state, road design ain't one of our highlights.

In all seriousness, I'm glad the move was the right one was you.

You're welcome Alleycat. That was my one con! I get so confused on Old Fort Prkwy turning into those crazy access roads and such for shopping. It gets me nervous, but I suppose I will get used to it eventually. LOL! I love my GPS too. Without it I would have been in big trouble!

My wife lived many years in Hialeah Gardens, so I can speak for her. This is what she would say:

pros:
affordable
laid back/slow pace of life

cons:
imposing religious beliefs
confusing street designs
people assuming all Latin Americans are Mexican (or here illegaly)
edit: she said I should put in here the nightlife doesn't compare to South Florida

Kim, Ya"ll learn it, my daughter gives me dirrections when I visit her at MTSU in Murfreesboro. She is in her 2nd semester there now. I was there moving her and her friend from one dorm to another on Friday. She told me she rarely uses her GPS anymore because she has learned the roads.

I will get it someday. It may take me longer than most since I am directionally challenged anywhere I live. I get so turned around. I panic! I have done much better with GPS. Even if I do get lost, no one has to know. I will eventually find my way! LOL!

Are those GPSs accurate? I don't know if they're anything like Google maps, which are at least 2 years old.

It's gotten me all over the place. They are pretty accurate. The only thing you have to remember is that some streets here have more than one name. That is easy enough to overcome if you glance at the map. It may be vocalizing an old street name at times, but it will still be the right one. The only trouble they have is with new developments. It can't always find streets inside subs that are new. I am going to buy an upgrade cd for mine. It's time for it and I'm sure some of the newer subs will then be included. One other thing, is that gps sometimes wants to take you around the mulberry bush so to speak. It will start giving you directions from the first street you find that can take you to your destination, not always the best way, but then you get to know when to ignore claire (that's what I call my GPS voice) and when not to. Sometimes I have to tell her to shut up because I know she is trying to take me the long way! LOL! You can program it for shortest distance, best route and to avoid highways as well. All and all, I love mine more than google maps, because if you defer from the map or make a mistake it will still get you there, where a map can't reroute you from the planned trip you entered on your computer.
