where not to live in nash
my hubby and i looking to relocate to nashville this summer. we are looking for a place to live and, within our budget (no more than $800ish a month), we have come up with places mostly in murfreesboro and antioch. they all seem the same and though we will be visit for ourselves, are there any specific areas of either of these areas to avoid because of safety/crime issues?
*granted, we are coming from chicago but we want to start a family and i'd rather not worry about talking walks in a bad area.

Hi chitown,
We are relocating from the Chicagoland area this month. I am afraid you will find prices about equal to Chicago. $800 a month will not get you anything you would feel safe living in that I have seen, especially if you are trying to stay close in to Nashville. Be very careful about areas, as crime is a problem we have personally experienced in Nashville already. We never had a problem in Chicago, but our car has already been broken into down here. If you are moving to Nashville because you think it will be cheaper than Chicago, you may want to rethink that.
I am sure everyone in Nashville will disagree with me, but I know for a fact that Nashville is not as affordable as people lead you to believe.

I agree with the above about affordability in Nashville. We moved thinking it was going to be relatively cheap, but are finding it not to be quite so...
As far as crime goes, definitely stay out of north Nashville....

we're in logan square right now. paying $750 for a 3rd fl walk up with 2 bedrooms. its nice enough but i do walk faster when im alone. somewhere without brake-ins would of course be a plus!
if it is the same price down there, is it at least nice in other ways or have i been totally mislead? it has to be warmer! and ive heard the job market is good.

south Nashville off Nolensville Rd. south of 440; Antioch
east Nashville: It's bad in different pockets, so it's hard to pinpoint the good vs. bad areas over there.
west Nashville: There are some great parts over there. Bellevue, West Meade, Hillsboro Village. Bellevue has plenty of apartments for rent in a decent price range.

I'll be the first to admit that I think middle TN prices are inflated, but equal to Chicago? That just doesn't sound right.
According to the National Association of Realtors, the median sales price of existing single-family homes in the Chicago MSA was $286,400 in the 3rd quarter of 2007. In Nashville it was $186,400.
According to Coldwell Banker's annual Home Price Comparison Index (HPCI), a 2,200-square-foot house with 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, a family room and a two-car garage in a neighborhood "typical for corporate middle-management transferees" would cost $815,000 in Chicago and $209,300 in Nashville.
Take it for what it's worth. I've never lived in Chicago, I'm just passing along info I have.
