Did anybody see this? I thought this was interesting. Looks like the majority of Tennesseans oppose gay marriage. What's interesting is that the number of TN residents opposed to gay marrage actually went up since the ruling this summer.

Fifty-seven percent of people polled oppose gay marriage. A February poll, also conducted by
MTSU
, found that 55 percent of Tennesseans were against same-sex
marriages. Those numbers were down from the 64 percent opposition reported
in a 2014 poll from MTSU.
55 v. 57 is likely not significant.
64 v. 57 between 2014 and 2015 and that is a big drop in opposition so your slight increase (over a very small sample size) is likely insignificant.

Go look at the ages 18-34 - 49% (majority) SUPPORT it.

A lot of bible thumpers in Tennessee so the results aren't a shock. To many in this state "freedom" is understood to be the freedom to do what is approved by the Baptist church. I guess they have a problem with people entering into contractual relationship agreements (marriage) and feel gay marriage violates the sanctity of their 3rd or fourth marriage. Heck, we even have a bible thumping congressman Scott DesJarlais that opposes abortion (except when it is his indiscretion). (or so I have been told)

This could be attributed to the large amount of young people who have moved here in the last 5 years or so.

At least that was my first thought.

I certainly do agree that support for gay marriage is mostly coming from that age group.

It's not just the Baptists. Just about every major Christian church in TN does not approve of gay marriage.

I can only think of a few that approve of gay marriage.

Possibly, but that is still an assumption. There are plenty of people 18-34 that were born here who either support gay marriage or aren't against it.

I'm in the "don't support it but do not oppose it" camp. If two people want to enter into a contractual relationship agreement it is none of my business.

Why do the media really care whether or not one oppose homosexual marriage?

It is the media that needs to leave that alone and start writing something newsworthy that readers are interested to read!

BTW, why is this even in the Nashville forum?

MTSU (Murfreesboro) conducted the poll. It was one of top stories in Tennessean (Nashville newspaper) yesterday.

I'm sure you have no problem with the "contractual relationship" you propose as it applies to a father and say his 18-year-old daughter. And what a hoot - marriage is no more than a contract, never knew.

Don't you guys get tired of that worn-out phrase "bible-thumper"? I'm not even Christian mainstream, and the triteness seems pathetic. Do you have Koran-thumpers over there? If so have you used the phrase on C-D?
