I find it both hilarious and sad that the supermajority Republican controlled state legislature is unwilling to let the free market figure this out.

Yeah...go figure.

But at the same time, the liquor lobby has always had a strangely powerful role in politics (going way back before Republican control).



The problem is that the state created an environment where liquor stores could ONLY be small businesses...and any change to the law would put those businesses at risk (at least at some level). Essentially, those businesses have become dependent on the state's protection of the laws on the books...so if a full scale liquor chain moves in, it will likely crush the competition.

I think what they need to do is slowly decrease the regulations and allow the successful liquor stores to expand into multiple locations. The consumers don't need unnecessary restrictions, but this would allow for successful local stores to expand their business enough to compete with the big boys.
